Golan Heights Druse Residents Take Part in Support Rally for Arch Terrorist

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Hundreds of members of the Druse community in the Golan Heights and other supporters on Monday took part in a march along the border in support of Samir Kuntar, the arch terrorist released by Israel a number of months ago in the Regev-Goldwasser prisoner exchange deal with Hizbullah. Simultaneously, in Syria, Kuntar and supporters held a similar event.

Also present on the Israeli side was MK (National Democratic Assembly) Said Naffaa as well as Sheikh Raid Salah, a senior figure in the Israel Islamic Association. They waved Lebanese and Syrian flags, and Salah vowed “to continue the struggle”.

On the Syrian side, Kuntar said, “Syrian President Assad asked me to tell you that soon, he will personally come to the Israeli side of the Golan waving a Syrian flag”.

Histadrut Heading towards a Strike – Treasury Says No to Pension Funds Safety Net

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The Histadrut National Labor Federation appears determined to make good on its threat to launch a public sector strike in two weeks in response to the treasury’s staunch opposition to bailout the ailing pension funds. Senior officials in the Finance Ministry feel such a move would have a disastrous impact on the national economy.

President Shimon Peres on Monday called on both sides to enter into negotiations towards assisting pension funds and averting a general strike but it appears the sides are moving further apart, not closer together.

Fed Commits $800 Billion More to Unfreeze Lending

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

fedlogo.jpgThe U.S. Federal Reserve, in another massive life-support intervention for the U.S. financial system, on Tuesday announced a $600 billion program to buy mortgage-related debt and securities and a $200 billion facility to buy consumer debt securities.

The U.S. central bank said it would buy up to $100 billion in debt issued by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks, the government-sponsored mortgage finance enterprises.

The following is a statement release by the Federal Reserve Bank:

The Federal Reserve announced on Tuesday that it will initiate a program to purchase the direct obligations of housing-related government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs)–Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks–and mortgage-backed securities (MBS) backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae.  Spreads of rates on GSE debt and on GSE-guaranteed mortgages have widened appreciably of late.  This action is being taken to reduce the cost and increase the availability of credit for the purchase of houses, which in turn should support housing markets and foster improved conditions in financial markets more generally.

Purchases of up to $100 billion in GSE direct obligations under the program will be conducted with the Federal Reserve’s primary dealers through a series of competitive auctions and will begin next week.  Purchases of up to $500 billion in MBS will be conducted by asset managers selected via a competitive process with a goal of beginning these purchases before year-end.  Purchases of both direct obligations and MBS are expected to take place over several quarters.  Further information regarding the operational details of this program will be provided after consultation with market participants.

Council Concerned About Proposed NYPD Cuts

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

nypd1.jpgSome members of the NYC Council are concerned that cutting the Police Department’s budget would affect its ability to fight crime.

The council on Monday debated the merits of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to slash next year’s police class in order to help balance the budget during the current fiscal crisis.

Many spoke out against eliminating the class of January 2009, which would reduce the force by more than 1,000 officers. That would bring the department to its lowest staffing level since the early 1990s.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the council that the department would continue to work to keep crime levels low.

“I don’t want to reduce any and I don’t want to lose any, but this is the world we live in,” Kelly said. “We are told this is the economic crisis of a lifetime, and we are going to have to deal with it.”

But some councilmembers said they fear that fewer police officers would mean a spike in crime.

“There is no quicker way to hurt an economy then to allow the crime rate to start creeping back up,” said Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. “And yet that’s what’s happening.”

The NYPD cuts are expected to save the city $45 million this year and $167 million next year.

Thailand: 2 Israelis Given Death Sentence For Drug Smuggling

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Two Israelis convicted of drug trafficking were sentenced to death Tuesday by a Thai court, Ynet reports. The two men plan to appeal the sentence. The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem confirmed the report.

The two Israelis, 34-year-old Vladimir Akronik and 37-year-old Alon Mahluf, were detained in the vicinity of Bangkok in possession of 23,000 ecstasy pills about a year ago. Thai media reported that the two arrived in Thailand from Europe and were detained after authorities received information about them from American officials.

Alex Avidan, who maintains contact with Israeli prisoners in Thailand, told Ynet: “Vladimir arrived in Thailand as an innocent backpacker, and a week later found himself imprisoned on drug trafficking charges. He told me he was entrapped. He said he arrived in Thailand in order to backpack, and someone asked him to hand over a key to someone else. He admitted that he was foolish.”

Avidan said that the death penalty in Thailand is very rare, noting that the gravest offence in the country is the abduction of minors, followed by drug trafficking.

“The maximal penalty imposed on drug traffickers is indeed a death sentence, but I know Israelis who are in jail for drug trade offences,” he said. Turning his attention to conditions at prison, Avidan said: “The policy of prisons all across the Far East is that inmates get a cement floor and 180 grams of rice to eat. Everything depends on outside help.”

Avidan also noted that the local Jewish community, headed by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Nechemiah Wilhelm, was assisting the two men.

MKs Call on Government to Abandon Plans for Bet HaShalom Eviction

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Forty-eight MKs signed their names in support of the residents of the Bet HaShalom in Chevron, calling on the government to abandon plans to evict the Jewish residents, at the very least until after the general election.

Unlike the reports appearing in the media, the MKs correctly pointed out that the Supreme Court does not compel the government to evict the tenants of the building in dispute, but it gives them the right should they decide to do so.

Among the lawmakers who signed the letter of support were Minister Rafi Eitan (Pensioners), MK Tzachi Hanegbi (Kadima), and others from the Likud, Bayit Yehuda, Yisrael Beitenu, Shas, Pensioners, UTJ, and Kadima parties.

Defense Ministry: Migron Will be Relocated

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Defense Ministry officials in a response to the Supreme Court stated that following two years of court hearings, the Shomron community of Migron, near Psagot, will be relocated to nearby Yishuv Adam.

Defense Ministry officials stated that the community of 45 families is currently sitting on Arab land and there is now agreement that the community will relocate once the replacement is ready for residents to move in.

A petition was filed with the high court in 2006 by the Peace Now organization and Arabs claiming they own the land on which the community was built.

Gafne Warns of Consequences of Continued Infighting in Agudah

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

gafni.jpgVeteran Agudath Yisrael MK Mosher Gafne, of the Degel HaTorah faction, warns of the dire consequences that will result if unity is not achieved inside the party.

In an interview with Chadrei Chadarim, he begins by pointing out that the general election campaign for the 18th Knesset is underway, and already, Tzipi Livni has released statements attacking the chareidi public.

CC:

Why must each campaign be based on hate for chareidim?

GAFNE:

I do not think it is based on chareidi hate, but there are other factors as well, including the fact she is still angry that she failed to build a coalition. It is hypocrisy. First she promises us a great deal and then offers nothing, then painting us as extortionists. Another reason prompting her attack is her sharp drop in the polls and her advisors pushed her to lash out at the chareidim to win the election. In addition, she is aware that Shas will go with Bibi, but not with her.

Whatever the case, the anti-chareidi issue will not dominate the election but rather security and economic concerns.

CC:

With whom will UTJ align itself following the election?

GAFNE:

We will discuss the issue based on the current realities. We do not decide in advance. At the end of the day, there is no major difference between Tzipi and Bibi. The damage that Bibi did to us as finance minister is unforgivable. Therefore, we do not express our opinion ahead of the election. We will ultimately team up with the candidate who supports the Torah world and despite her remarks at present, I do not believe that Livni will have predefined positions but will do what is politically advantageous at the time.

CC:

Of late, we have seen physical and verbal violence in our camp. What is the solution?

GAFNE:

To my joy, we are not apart of it but I do hope that Agudah will find a solution soon. After all, we are running together and if there is a faction not voting for us, we all lose. I spoke with both Porush and Litzman and told them the very same thing. The situation is absurd. The Torah world today is in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. The economic crisis impacts all of us and we are busy with internal fighting. It is unbelievable.

CC:

If Agudah does not work it out would you consider running independently, without Agudah?

GAFNE:

If this is the case, we have a big problem. We are not considering running alone at present but if Agudah does not work it out, we have a big problem.

CC:

There is talk of reorganizing the lineup towards ‘cleansing the poison’. Have you heard anything along these lines?

GAFNE:

They have not discussed such an idea with me but it does not seem realistic. Only the Gedolei HaDor make such decisions, who will be in Knesset. I do not think such a move is necessary. Whoever must leave should leave. We do not engage in such acts, such as shuffling the lists, which may present well to the public. We are busy working to save the Torah world.

CC:

Degel was founded on the shadow of complaints there are those who never leave the Knesset. Aren’t you in fact doing the same thing?

GAFNE:

I never made such claims and that is not the case. We had problems with the method by which funds were distributed to Anash and today, things are different. The system has changed [for the better]. Today funds are distributed to the chareidi population without regard to sectors. To change us, why? Rav Shach always said why replace a person with experience.

CC:

It has been 20 years since Degel was founded. Any words in summary at this time?

GAFNE:

A summation is done at the end. We are in the midst of the process. We are becoming stronger and our ideology is gaining momentum in a growing number of communities. This is not the time for summations – we save this for the end.

CC:

There are those who feel chareidi parties are the cause of much hate and disdain, feeling it may be beneficial to join secular parties with the understanding the religious status quo would remain ‘as is’. How do you view this issue?

GAFNE:

One making such claims does not understand what he is talking about and is totally unaware of the day-to-day battles that we wage. There are major problems that an outsider is not capable of understanding — issues of ideology and funding that a non-frum person is incapable of understanding. Eliminate chareidi parties. Those who say this haven’t the slightest idea what they are talking about.

CC:

Of late, a new entity is forming, an entity with a ‘good name’ composed of people who are from our camp, from Degel. What is your feeling on this?

GAFNE:

In Betar, they still have not paid attention to them. They have not noticed this important phenomenon. In the election we took notice and despite efforts to launch a nationwide party, we prevented this from becoming reality. We also hoped to halt it in Bet Shemesh, but this did not occur. To the heart of the matter, I feel we must find a solution. I personally spend a considerable amount of time on seeking a solution for these people. But they too must understand that a person who lives a certain lifestyle must send his child to an appropriate framework. Therefore, there are different talmidei torah and each person must send children to the appropriate institution.

These people are ‘us’ and we feel their pain. There are a number of people who are ideologically motivated, acting on the party that was, now paying the price for not adhering to the words of Gedolei Yisrael. They have no place in Degel HaTorah. These people are unwelcome.  I think that at the end, they also ran independently in Bet Shemesh due to their ideological leanings, not because of a crisis pertaining to mosdos limud (schools).

LIRR Continues Delays, Cancelled Trains Through Tuesday

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

lirr.jpgLong Island Rail Road riders will have to brace themselves for another day of messed up service. Though MTA repair crews have been working nonstop since Sunday to fix damaged rails and switches after a train derailed just west of Jamaica Station – forcing numerous cancellations during the morning and evening rush hours and delays.

Newsday reports that LIRR President Helena Williams asked customers to hang on, “We have significant repair work to do. We are asking, again, for our customers to have patience. We know that that’s a lot to ask our customers, but they are a good New York, sturdy breed.” Newsday also described the extent of the damage:

The accident took place Sunday afternoon when the three rear cars of a 10-car train derailed – one of them jackknifing across three separate tracks and tearing up dirt and rubble in its path. The two rearmost cars needed to be cut apart at their coupling point with torches, and wooden blocks secured the jackknifed train at various points to keep it from tipping over. A crane was required to put the train back on track.
WCBS 2 says that federal investigators are also looking into the derailment, since it’s the second incident at the station in days (two trains bumped last week) and third this year (a derailment in March).

The following is an alert released by the MTA:

MTA Long Island Rail Road customers are advised to anticipate schedule changes that include canceled trains and delays in the morning as a result of a derailment that occurred in Jamaica on Sunday.

Over 200 LIRR employees have been working round-the-clock to re-rail the three train cars on the west end of Jamaica Station.   The work also includes repair to the damaged switches and track caused by the derailment.  Currently, three tracks remain out of service due to the accident.

“We are grateful to our customers for their patience during this time,” said LIRR President Helena Williams. “The Monday evening rush hour went smoothly under the circumstances. Our LIRR crews have been working nonstop to repair damaged rail and switches so that we can resume normal operations as soon as is safely possible. We are making progress and will keep our customers updated on our efforts.”

The Tuesday AM Rush service plan includes cancellation of 12 westbound AM rush trains.  As a result, there will be residual delays from added station stops and not all scheduled connections will be available at Jamaica Station to Penn Station, Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn, Hunterspoint Avenue, and Long Island City.   LIRR station personnel will be available at Jamaica to assist customers with service information. The modified plan also includes service changes for the eastbound AM Rush, in particular 9 of the 15 eastbound reverse peak trains from Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, will be canceled.

Westbound AM Peak Service:

The following westbound AM Rush trains will be canceled Tuesday morning in the modified service plan:
6:25 AM train from Hicksville, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:11 AM
6:26 AM train from Massapequa Park, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:22 AM
6:57 AM train from Freeport, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:40 AM.
7:23 AM train from Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 8:20 AM
7:29 AM train from Freeport, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:13 AM
7:40 AM train from Ronkonkoma, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 9:01 AM
7:43 AM train from Merrick, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:31 AM
8:03 AM train from Long Beach, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:54 AM
8:03 AM train from Valley Stream, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:42 AM
8:38 AM train from Long Beach, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 9:26 AM

The following trains will terminate in Jamaica Tuesday morning:
7:12 AM train from Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:03 AM
7:16 AM train from West Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Ave. at 8:03 AM

Eastbound (Reverse Peak) Service:
LIRR eastbound, reverse peak service from Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn will be extremely limited — with one passenger train departing the Brooklyn terminal per hour.  Customers should  consider using Penn Station reverse peak service, which is expected to operate at regularly scheduled times;  however customers should anticipate delays en-route.

The following reverse peak trains will operate from Flatbush Avenue on Tuesday morning:
5:29 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Long Beach at 6:22 AM
5:52 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in West Hempstead at 6:38 AM
6:48 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Long Beach at 7:36 AM
7:51 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Hempstead at 8:38 AM

Bush, Olmert Have Last Meeting Before Ending Terms

Monday, November 24th, 2008

bol.jpgPresident George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert bid each other farewell on Monday, expressing confidence in an eventual Mideast peace deal that won’t materialize on either of their watches.

Bush and Olmert met for more than an hour at the White House as their time in office winds to a close. Bush’s two terms end Jan. 20. Olmert plans to resign amid corruption charges and will step down after a successor is chosen on Feb. 10.

Earlier Monday, the Israeli leader had breakfast with Rice and national security adviser Stephen Hadley and met with Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush, Olmert, first lady Laura Bush and the Israeli prime minister’s wife, Aliza, dined privately at the White House.

The following are their public remarks to the media:

PRESIDENT BUSH: I am pleased to welcome my friend, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, back to the Oval Office.  And I thank you for bringing your wife to have dinner tonight with Laura and me.  I’m looking forward to it.

We’ve been through a lot together during our time in office.  We strongly believe that Israel will benefit by having a Palestinian state, a democracy on her border that works for peace.  And, Prime Minister, that vision is alive because of you.  And I thank you for your steadfast support for peace.

And it’s not easy.  It’s not easy to try to change the paradigm, and I understand that.  But one thing is for certain — you’ve kept your word.  And in international politics, that’s important.  And I want to thank you for the friendship, and thank you for your vision.  And I just want you to know that I believe that vision is alive and needs to be worked on.

And again, I welcome you.  Appreciate you coming.

PRIME MINISTER OLMERT: Thank you very much, Mr. President.  I’m delighted to have this opportunity to express again the deep gratitude we all have to you, personally, as a human being, as a friend, as a courageous leader who has helped Israel so much over the period since you were President of the United States of America.

I will never forget that you have removed one of the most threatening strategic dangers from Israel on the east side, in Iraq.  And this is a great achievement that makes life much better for many people in our part of the world, particularly for us and for our neighbors, as well.

You have set forth in motion the Annapolis process, which I was very proud to take part in.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Yes, sir.

PRIME MINISTER OLMERT: It continues with your guidance and support and inspiration.  And this is very important, because as you say, a two-state solution is the only possible way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.

So, Mr. President, on behalf of the people of Israel, I want to thank you.  The importance of your leadership is greatly appreciated in our country.  And I’m sure that when the history books will be written, the contributions that you made to the safety and security of many people will be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I want to thank you for your friendship on behalf of my wife, Aliza, and myself.  And I’m so happy and proud that I had an opportunity to speak of it to you before you leave this great place and before I leave my office.  And I’m sure that we will continue our friendship for many years to come.

Thank you very much.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, sir.  Thank you.

Likud, Meretz & Kadima Take the Campaign to the Internet

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Taking their cue from the recent American presidential elections, the Likud, Meretz and Kadima parties are placing a good deal of their campaign funds into their respective websites.

Likud is allocating almost one-half of its election funds, with Kadima spending a third of its campaign and Meretz reporting a sizable sum.

Likud is preparing Internet infomercials, Russian language content, which will be launched on Thursday. Each of the sites, English and Russian, employs ten people.

The Likud site will permit campaign donations as well as registering as a party member in the “spirit of the Obama campaign” the site’s webmaster reports.

As the party did in 2006, Kadima will focus heavily on its website and this time around, it will permit a direct link to Tzipi Livni. Kadima is also seeking to attract immigrant voters and as such, will also host a Russian language site. 20 people are earning a fulltime salary to keep the site and its content up and running.

Meretz or perhaps under the banner of a new left-wing entity, plans a massive Internet campaign. Two former Obama campaign workers have been brought to Israel to assist in creating a campaign success in Israel as the president-elect achieved in the USA with his resounding victory. Meretz officials are optimistic, explaining they have a powerful voice among the nation’s young, and the Internet is where they can be found.

Labor is dragging behind, primarily due to the party’s bleak fiscal realities. Its site is not expected to present any real competition to the other three mentioned.

Avandia’s Heart Risk Higher Than Others in Its Class

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The widely used diabetes drug Avandia — already controversial because of cardiovascular side effects — may be riskier than Actos, another drug in the same class, researchers reported Monday.
The risk of heart failure and death for older diabetics appears greater with Avandia (rosiglitazone) than with Actos (pioglitazone), both of which are part of a class of drugs called thiazolidinediones, Harvard University researchers said.
Avandia and Actos are used to lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent studies suggested that the risk for heart failure, death and heart attack were increased with Avandia, touching off a controversy that resulted in new FDA-mandated label warnings about the drug.
“By contrast, Actos did not appear to increase the risk of cardiac events,” said lead researcher Dr. Wolfgang C. Winkelmayer, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. “One could get the impression that Actos led to the reduction of heart attacks.”
Indirectly, people inferred that it might be better to use Actos, because Avandia has cardiovascular risks associated with it, Winkelmayer said.
“We did find that patients using rosiglitazone actually had an increased risk of mortality from any cause. We did not find a difference in heart attacks and strokes,” Winkelmayer said. But, he added, more patients taking Avandia were hospitalized for heart failure.
Winkelmayer noted differences in drugs in the same class are not unusual. For example, cholesterol-lowering statins (which include Crestor, Lipitor and Zocor) have different side effects, he said.
The new research, published in the Nov. 24 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, received funding from the American Heart Association, as well drug makers Amgen and GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Avandia.
For the study, Winkelmayer’s team collected data on more than 28,000 diabetic patients aged 65 and older who were taking Avandia or Actos between 2000 and 2005. Among these patients, 50.3 percent took Actos and 49.7 percent took Avandia.

After a little more than a year on the medications, 1,869 patients died. The researchers found that patients taking Avandia had a 15 percent higher rate of death compared with patients taking Actos. In addition, Avandia patients had a 13 percent greater risk of heart failure than patients on Actos.

GlaxoSmithKline defended its drug in a statement on the new research released Monday.
The company “strongly supports the safety and efficacy of Avandia based on extensive clinical trial experience and widespread post-marketing use. This new study is inconsistent with evidence from randomized clinical trials and has significant limitations,” the statement said.

A randomized clinical trial — in which participants are randomly grouped and then followed prospectively over time — is typically considered more reliable than an observational study, which is not as well-controlled.
“The primary outcome in this observational analysis is all-cause mortality,” the company statement added. “The Avandia prescribing information includes data from RECORD, an ongoing long-term randomized clinical trial that has shown no statistically significant differences between the Avandia group and the control group regarding death from cardiovascular causes or any cause.”

The continuing controversy over the heart risks of these diabetes drugs began with a 2007 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, in which heart expert Dr. Steven E. Nissen, chairman of the Cleveland Clinic’s department of cardiovascular medicine, reported a 43 percent increased risk of heart attack among patients taking Avandia.

In November 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that GlaxoSmithKline had agreed to add to the existing “black box” a new warning about the potential increased risk for heart attacks. Previously, the FDA had requested that GlaxoSmithKline and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Actos, add a “black box” warning about the increased risk of heart failure associated with both drugs.

In July 2008, an FDA advisory panel said that drugs designed to control type 2 diabetes, including Avandia, should be subjected to more thorough safety reviews to ensure they don’t raise the risk of heart problems. They recommended that all makers of these drugs conduct long-term cardiovascular trials, even if the drugs show no signs of heart problems in initial trials.

But Winkelmayer believes that neither Avandia nor Actos should be used as initial treatment. When they are used, they should be used with caution, especially with patients prone to heart problems, he said.

Dr. Eric J. Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute and chief academic officer at Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif., also thinks both drugs should be used cautiously.

“The study reinforces the heart failure risk of rosiglitazone versus pioglitazone,” Topol said. “Interestingly, it doesn’t show any difference in heart attack, which is the one issue that has been so controversial. So it doesn’t really change things that much.”

Of the two drugs, Actos appears to have a more favorable track record, Topol added. “But the possibility of cardiovascular side effects, including heart failure and heart attack, can’t be forgotten.”

Livni Vanishes from Knesset Committee for Months

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee on Monday had harsh words of criticism for Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who according to MK (Likud) Dr. Yuval Shteinitz has not appeared before the committee in seven months.

Another committee member concurred, while Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) reports the figure is more accurately about five months, but by all accounts, too long for the senior minister to not have briefed the committee members on her actions.

Calls included “She should spend less time abroad and begin doing her work and fulfilling responsibilities at home.

As the general election for the 18th Knesset is in full swing, Livni, who is the successor of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as the Kadima leader, is coming under mounting criticism for failing to articulate, to come out and state he position and policies on an array of issues.

Critics, including political opponents and the media, accuse Livni of continuing to seek to portray herself as the politically clean candidate, but she repeatedly quotes her advisors and others, habitually failing to state her own opinion and policy on critical issues.

President Bush Pardons 14 People

btu.jpgPresident George W. Bush has granted pardons to 14 individuals and commuted the prison sentences of two others, The Associated Press learned Monday.

The new round of White House pardons are Bush’s first since March and come less than two months before he will end his presidency. The crimes committed by those on the list include drug offenses, income tax evasion, bank embezzlement and violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Bush has been stingy during his time in office about handing out such reprieves.

Including these actions, he has granted a total of 171 and eight commutations. That’s less than half as many as Presidents Clinton or Reagan issued during their time in office. Both were two-term presidents.

On the latest pardon list were:

Leslie Owen Collier of Charleston, Mo.

Milton Kirk Cordes of Rapid City, S.D.

Richard Micheal Culpepper of Mahomet, Ill.

Brenda Jean Dolenz-Helmer of Fort Worth, Texas.

Andrew Foster Harley of Falls Church, Va.

Obie Gene Helton of Rossville, Ga.

Carey C. Hice Sr. of Travelers Rest, S.C.

Geneva Yvonne Hogg of Jacksonville, Fla.

William Hoyle McCright Jr. of Midland, Texas.

Paul Julian McCurdy of Sulphur, Okla.

Robert Earl Mohon Jr. of Grant, Ala.

Ronald Alan Mohrhoff of Los Angeles.

Daniel Figh Pue III of Conroe, Texas.

Orion Lynn Vick of White Hall, Ark.

Bush also commuted the prison sentences of John Edward Forte of North Brunswick, N.J., and James Russell Harris of Detroit.

Under the Constitution, the president’s power to issue pardons is absolute and cannot be overruled.

Some high-profile individuals, such as Michael Milken, are seeking a pardon on securities fraud charges. Two politicians convicted of public corruption — former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, R-Calif., and four-term Democratic Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards — are asking Bush to shorten their prison terms.

One hot topic of discussion related to pardons is whether Bush might decide to issue pre-emptive pardons before he leaves office to government employees who authorized or engaged in harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Some constitutional scholars and human rights groups want the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama to investigate possible war crimes.

If Bush were to pardon anyone involved, it would provide protection against criminal charges, particularly for people who were following orders or trying to protect the nation with their actions. But it would also be highly controversial.

At the same time, Obama advisers say there is little — if any — chance that his administration would bring criminal charges.
