Former Gaza Commander & Deputy DM Vilnai Head South

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Officials in IDF Southern Command on Sunday received assistance from a surprise source, former Gaza Division Commander Brig.-Gen. Moshe Tamir. He arrived in the command pit as it is called to assist in the ongoing operation.

Tamir completed his assignment in Gaza about two months ago but his promotion and next assignment are delayed after he permitted his son to drive an IDF ATV and failed to report the youth damaged it in an accident. His son is unlicensed and the military prosecutor is filing charges against the senior officer as a result of the incident and his attempt to cover it up.

Tamir, together with IDF Southern Commander Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant and air force commander Major-General Eliezer Shkedy are the architects of Operation Cast Lead.

Southern area residents also received a boost when they heard Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai arrived in a Sderot apartment, where he is residing to be close to the reality of what is taking place. He spent the night as well, officials report.

During the evening hours, he toured some of the rocket-stricken municipalities.

Turkey Condemns Gaza Operation

Monday, December 29th, 2008

turkey.jpgIsrael’s close ally Turkey, has joined the Arab world in condemning the ongoing military operation in Gaza.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan came out strongly against the military action, adding he is suspending his involvement as a mediator in talks between Israel and Syria.

The prime minister used strong language, calling the operation “a crime against humanity”, adding Syria is unwilling to maintain the indirect dialogue with Israel in response to the Gaza action.

The Prime Minister’s Office expressed sorrow over the remarks, adding that of late, Damascus has strengthened its ties with Hamas and has ignored calls from Israel to break ties with the ‘axis of evil’ towards normalized relations with Jerusalem.

Hundreds protested outside the Israeli Embassy in Turkey against the military operation.

In a related matter, the Israel Foreign Ministry denies an al-Jazeera report that protestors broke through the gate of the Israeli Embassy in Britain during a protest. The Foreign Ministry does confirm however that security for diplomatic missions around the world is being increased.

VIDEO & PHOTOS: Terror Attack in Kiryat Sefer [UPDATED 12:43PM IL]

Monday, December 29th, 2008

mda2.jpg8:09AM IL [UPDATES, VIDEO & PHOTOS BELOW] According to preliminary reports from Kiryat Sefer, an Arab armed with a knife is stabbing people in the street. It appears a number of people have already been injured. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

08:16AM IL
: According to the first Hatzolah responders on the scene, two people were stabbed or cut in their throats. They appear in moderate condition. The attacker seems to have fled the scene.

08:26AM IL
: It appears that what police believe was a terror attack began on Rashbi street near a shul. It now appears another person injured by a knife was found on Yehuda HaNasi Street. His condition is unknown. Regarding the first two victims, one appears to be in critical condition and the second moderate-to-serious.

In addition, an Arab male who was shot was found on Hillel & Shamai Street, presumed to have been the attacker but there is too much confusion to know with absolute certainty.

08:36AM IL: A search is underway for another Arab. According to statements from people who witnessed the attack in Kiryat Sefer, there were two terrorists, not one as was first believed.

08:47AM IL: A total of four people were injured in the Monday morning terror attack in the Brachfeld area of Kiryat Sefer, two seriously, one moderately and the fourth lightly.

08:53AM IL: Police are not ruling out the possibility that two Arabs were involved and they operated in different locations simultaneously. Police are still searching for one terrorist believed at large in the area.

09:01AM IL: Police report the attacker in Kiryat Sefer is an air conditioning technician who worked in the chareidi community. He used a screwdriver to attack his victims. A second attacker is believed still at large.

One victim is reported in serious condition at this time. The others appear in moderate and light condition according to the latest report.

09:06AM: The Vishnitz Rosh Yeshiva in Modi’in Illit was seriously wounded in the stabbing attack. The tzibur is requested to daven for Gavriel Yosef Avraham Aaron ben Yuta.

09:11AM IL: It now appears there are a total of five victims in the stabbing attack, two in serious condition and the others moderate and light condition. One terrorist, who was shot, is en route to a hospital in serious condition. A manhunt for a second attacker continues.

The preliminary police theory that two attackers operated independent of one another seems correct at this time.

09:25AM IL: Hatzolah volunteer Yehuda Herzig who was at the scene explains: All the victims were transported from the scene. Two are in moderate or more serious condition. The victims are important personalities in the chareidi world. The shul where the attack occurred is in the heart of the city near a building site.

The terrorist worked on the building site and also attacked his employer who is in serious condition. One very important rav is among the wounded. The attacker fled the scene with a foreman. They picked up someone on the way. The person they picked up is a member of the first response unit of the community, who immediately realized the person in the car is the terrorist who they are looking for. The incident ended with gunfire and the terrorist was seriously wounded.

10:06AM IL: A Hatzolah volunteer is among the seriously wounded in the terror attack. The tzibur is asked to daven for Aryeh ben Varda.

12:43PM IL: Tzvika Deutsch at about 12:30pm explained his brother Aryeh [ben Varda], who was seriously wounded in the Monday morning Modi’in Illit terror attack, was already in surgery for 2.5 hours. According to updates that he received from doctors, the surgery is going well and Aryeh sustained a fractured skull and there is internal cranial bleeding as well. Doctors are indicating the surgery should last about three hours.

Aryeh is married with four children.

The attacker works in Modi’in Illit construction for 12 years, and for the past three years, has been working for the brothers, who started their own contracting company. Tzvika stated that at present, it is difficult to use the word but prior to the stabbing attack, the attacker was considered a friend, someone he knew and treated well.

IDF Preparing to Enter Gaza

Monday, December 29th, 2008

idftank2.jpgAfter 48 hours of aerial bombing attacks at Hamas terrorists and the organization’s infrastructure, the IDF is openly preparing for the next phase of Operation Cast Lead, entering into Hamas-controlled Gaza.

A seemingly endless stream of tanks, armored vehicles and assorted military vehicles are making their way to Gaza along with buses packed with soldiers who are taking up position along the border. Artillery batteries are also seen along the border in preparation for what appears will be a massive offensive to crush Hamas’ rocket-firing abilities.

Towards achieving this goal, the cabinet on Sunday approved a request from Defense Minister Ehud Barak to activate 6,700 IDF reservists, who are being served with emergency call-up orders known as ‘tzav-8’, which gives a reservist 48 hours to report to duty.

A senior security official stated, “Every target is legitimate as far as we are concerned. This will be a long battle that will demand endurance. We will not cease however until our objective has been achieved.”

Echoing his words was Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who on Sunday made a visit to IDF Southern Command Headquarters, stating the operation will be expanded as the situation demands.

While infantry and armored corps personnel prepare themselves along the border, the air force was busy for a second consecutive day, striking targets throughout Gaza. Some 40 weapons smuggling tunnels were bombarded along the Philadelphi Route to Egypt – with the tunnels serving as a terrorist lifeline as well as a profitable underground economy which has permitted many Gazans to survive while making dealers quite wealthy in the process. The tunnel system has become a sophisticated underground pipeline for the import of anything, from basic daily supplies to advanced weapons.

Nevertheless, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in his Cairo meeting with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni this past Thursday stated his country is unaware how the weapons have been smuggled into Gaza. Israeli intelligence has documented Egypt’s turning-a-blind-eye policy since Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, which following the 2005 Disengagement Plan.

In addition to targeting the underground tunnel network, some 50 targets were eliminated on Sunday military officials report. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi reported during a briefing that the IAF eliminated about half of the pits used to launch Kassam rockets as well as severely impacting other Hamas infrastructure including weapons storage facilities. ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) Director Yuval Diskin stated the Hamas leadership is in shock, admitting the intelligence community is perplexed as to why Hamas during the past 48 hours has only fired about 30 rockets daily when the terrorist are capable of launching about 200 daily.

Diskin states “they were hit hard and took a big blow but Hamas remains highly motivated and still maintains the ability to strike out hard and there are many rockets remaining.

One senior Southern Command officer explained that an aerial strike alone cannot deliver a lethal blow to Hamas and infantry has to be sent in. Another officer added, “Just because Hamas did not respond today does not mean it will not attack tomorrow.” Diskin confirmed the terror organization will attempt to use the element of surprise against Israel.

Barak on Sunday also declared a state of emergency in the area 20km (12 miles) from the Gaza border to enable military officials to give orders to civilian agencies regarding directives to citizens during this wartime period. Barak’s order also permitted Industry & Trade Minister Eli Yishai to order employees of essential businesses to report to work to ensure a steady supply of items such as dairy products, bread and so forth.

Senator Schumer: NYS Can Get $5B in Fed Financial Aid

Monday, December 29th, 2008

schumer.jpgNew York – Sen. Charles Schumer says the state could get at least $5 billion in financial aid under a new economic stimulus package being developed by President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team and congressional leaders.

The senator is expected to discuss Monday how the funds for New York could help defray budget cuts and future tax hikes. He says the state could also benefit because the funds could be directed to mass transportation projects nationwide.

Obama adviser David Axelrod said Sunday that the cost of a stimulus plan could be “$675 billion to $775 billion.” But he said “those numbers are not fixed.”

Emergency Government May Extend Olmert’s Tenure

Monday, December 29th, 2008

olmert2.jpgThere are many scenarios being churned out by analysts and one is the formation of an emergency government may result if Operation Cast Lead is prolonged, which many predict will be the case once ground forces enter Gaza.

It is entirely possible that if the situation worsens chas v’sholom, there will be widespread calls for the formation of an emergency cabinet, which will be difficult for party leaders to reject.

Should an emergency cabinet emerge, then the tenure of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may be extended, for weeks or longer, to permit the emergency cabinet to maintain national unity during this time of warfare.

At present, due to the situation in southern Gaza and the warfare in Gaza, election campaigning has already come to a halt.

N.Y. Develops New System for Tracking Health Risk

Monday, December 29th, 2008

health2.jpgNew Yorkers can find out which commonly preventable illnesses are more likely to occur in their own neighborhood — and whether racial disparity plays a role in prevention — through a new Web site launched this week.

To check your neighborhood, click here.

The state Department of Health created a tool that allows New Yorkers to check whether 12 preventable conditions — like diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure — are predominant in their zip code.

The system will let health officials and local health lobbyists identify gaps in services to specific communities, and target them for the most needed improvements. It’s part of the state Health Department’s larger goal of getting more New Yorkers covered under primary care — instead of waiting until serious illness sets in, requiring expensive long-term treatment.

Despite being among the top three states in per capita health care spending, New York ranks 39th among states for hospital admissions for preventable conditions, according to the health department.

“This doesn’t mean New York’s hospitals are doing a bad job; on the contrary, our hospitals are providing excellent acute care,” said Dr. Richard Daines, the state commissioner of health. “What it means is that too many New Yorkers are not getting effective primary care to prevent, detect and treat conditions before they become serious and require hospitalization.”

The site also allows the public to identify instances of disparity — racial and regional. For example, four Albany zip codes (12202, 12204, 12207 and 12210) have hospitalization rates for diabetes complications that are 57 percent higher than the statewide rate.

Three downtown Brooklyn zip codes (11201,11205 and 11217) have admission rates for uncontrolled diabetes that are more than two-and-a-half times statewide norms, with admission rates for blacks and Hispanics nearly five times the statewide rate, according to the site.

Called a prevention quality indicator, the free, publicly accessible Web site identifies hospitalization rates for angina, congestive heart failure and hypertension. It also checks for diabetes related conditions, like short-term and long-term complications, lower extremity amputation, and uncontrolled diabetes.

The site also checks for local rates of respiratory-related and acute conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and urinary tract infection.
