NYS Senator Espada Expresses Support For East River Bridge Tolls

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

State Senator Pedro Espada has come out in favor of tolls on some East River bridges.

The majority leader now says he supports a $2 toll on the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg and Queensboro Bridges.

Espada is adding a bridge toll proposal to state budget negotiations. He says the tolls are a better option than the looming Metropolitan Transportation Authority service cuts and the elimination of free student MetroCards.

Espada says his support for the tolls is contingent upon the money going to saving programs that may be cut.

“I would only support it if it is a direct link, a lock box, a dedicated fund for free student MetroCards and also directly going to make sure that those bus lines and transportation lines that move seniors to their medical appointments, that, too, receives an exemption and a priority in this budget,” said Espada.

Espada says estimates by the Traffic Congestion Mitigation Commission show the tolls would raise around $525 million a year, while reducing pollution and congestion.

Israeli Journalist Feldman Released by Egypt

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Journalist Yotam Feldman, who was arrested trying to infiltrate into Israel from Sinai, was released by Egyptian officials late Sunday night.

Last week, YWN-Israel reported (http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/article.php?p=51252) that Feldman was arrested as he tried crossing into southern Israel along with a number of African nationals. It was learned that Feldman crossed into Egypt legally along the Taba Crossing and was involved in a journalistic piece regarding infiltrations from Sinai into Israel when taken into custody.

It appears Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai used his good relations with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman to arrange Feldman’s release.

Feldman told the media on Monday morning that any video footage he gathered for his assignment was confiscated by Egyptian officials. Feldman added the incarceration “was very brutal” and conditions were harsh.

Litzman: Criticism Due to His Chareidi Affiliation

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Deputy Health Minister R’ Yaakov Litzman, who succeeded in obtaining a cabinet majority for the position of daas Torah is not making excuses, but he is going on the offensive, explaining his opponents are only angered since in this case, the man in charge is chareidi.

Speaking to the media following the cabinet decision approving a new venue for the fortified emergency room for Barzilai Hospital, Litzman rejects allegations that the move endangers human life. Defending his position, he explained that the previous Olmert administration reached the same decision, and at that time, the opponents remained silent, but today, with a chareidi official at the helm, the opponents are suddenly voicing their position.

Regarding recent statements from Israel Antiquities Authority officials that in all likelihood the kevarim are not of Jews, Litzman told the press that “It is interesting” since he has a protocol (minutes) from a meeting which took place about six months ago in which IAA officials explain they did not open the kevarim since they cannot establish the bones are not those of Jews.

Litzman’s plan to move the new fortified wing of Barzilai Hospital passed the cabinet, with ministers of the secular Yisrael Beitenu party as well.

Dr. Eitan Chai-Am, the director-general of the Health Ministry does not concur, and he insists the distance to the building is 400 meters, not 150 meters as Litzman claims. He is adamant that the new plan endangers lives and as such, he submitted his resignation following the cabinet’s decision to approve the Litzman plan. The plan passed in cabinet in a 11-10 vote. Chai-Am warns the Litzman plan will have dire consequences.

Voting in favor were: PM Netanyahu, FM Lieberman, Sofia Landver, Eli Yishai, Ariel Atias, Yaakov Margi, Meshulam Nahari, Yisrael Katz, Benny Begin, and Daniel Hershkowitz.

Opposed: DM Ehud Barak, Avishai Braverman, Shalom Simchon, Yitzchak Herzog, Yuli Edelstein, Yossi Peled, Michael Eitan, Dan Meridor, Gideon Saar and Limor Livnat.

Minister Hershkowitz told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) on Monday morning that it is understood by cabinet members that if during the upcoming month it is learned the bones are not those of Jews, the plan will come before the cabinet again for reconsideration.

MORE EXPENSIVE – LESS BEDS

Opponents explain the alternative plan that was approved is simply unacceptable, costing much more, an additional NIS 135 million, and resulting in far fewer beds.

At present, the Barzilai emergency room has 17 beds. The planned underground unit, atop of the kevarim, was to house 250 underground emergency room beds and 50 additional beds above ground, in the fortified unit.

The new plan calls for a total of 50 beds, above ground in a fortified unit, far less than the original plan.

KADIMA UNWILLING TO ACCEPT THE VERDICT

MKs from the Kadima opposition party insist this is simply unacceptable, gathering the required number of signatures to compel a special plenum session to discuss the matter.

DR. EPHRAIM SHACH SHARES HIS OPINION

Dr. Ephraim Shach, a son of the late Rabbi Menachem Man Shach ZT”L spoke with Israel Radio. He was asked “what would your late father have said in this case?”

Dr. Shach, a doctor of history and Jewish philosophy stated there are three possibilities;

1.    I do not know

2.    Bank Leumi – but that was commercial for profit, definitely Jewish graves

3.    Life takes priority

He emphasized his response was of course speculation, despite begin quite familiar with his later father’s methods and decisions. Regarding Bank Leumi, he does not feel the protests that compelled the bank to abandon a building project atop bones are similar since that was strictly a for-profit venture, not an issue of pikuach nefesh.

Dr. Shach stated that he personally does not agree, for he feels this is truly a case of pikuach nefesh. He feels that Maran Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv decided based on the information presented to him, but he questions just how the case was presented to the gadol hador. He does not feel that the gadol hador was given the big picture, details of the original plan and the new Litzman plan.

As we go to print, physicians at Barzilai are protesting the revised government plan.

Protest To Permit Jews Onto Har Habayis

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Despite A rally to demand freedom of worship for Jews will be held in Yerushalayim on Tuesday evening at which time participants will question why of late, Jews are banned from Har Habayis.

The event is slated to get underway on King George Street in the plaza in front of the Mashbir Department Store under the banner “The Time for Our Freedom Has Arrived”.

Har Habayis activists explain that while the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Jews wishing to daven on the Holy Site, police are empowered to override the ruling based on ‘security consideration’ and activists view such a move as giving in to Arab terror.

Organizers are calling on participants to bring sheep to symbolize the upcoming yomtov of Pesach.

It must be noted, that when YWN Israel reported this past Sukkos about President Shimon Peres’ historic visit to Maran Hagon Rav Elyashiv Shlita, the Posek Hador called on the president to prevent Jews from visiting Har HaBayis, stating it is an act that that is viewed as extremely provocative by the goyim. Maran stated everything possible must be done to avoid a religious war, and the provocateurs are playing with fire.

Maran was quoted as explaining to the president that halacha forbids going onto Har HaBayis but today, it is more than this, it is an act that may lead to a religious war and bloodshed.

Almanah Of R’ Leibish Teitelbaum HY”D Faces Immigration Nightmare

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

The following is a NY Post article: The widow of a Brooklyn-born rabbi, murdered two years ago by terrorists in Mumbai, is facing an immigration nightmare that threatens to keep her from seeing her eight children in New York.

Frumet Teitelbaum, 37, an Israeli citizen, was stopped by US Customs and Border Protection agents at Kennedy Airport after flying in from Israel on Feb. 5.

Since her husband’s murder, Frumet, a religious-studies teacher, had been regularly traveling without problems from her home in Israel to the US to visit her children, ages 2 to 14, who are staying with her husband’s family in Borough Park, Brooklyn. The kids, all American citizens, are being schooled in New York.

But Frumet’s frequent travels finally raised a red flag with Customs officials, who cited her for overusing her visitor’s visa, said her lawyer, Michael Wildes.

Frumet’s valid travel visa was consequently stamped with restrictions limiting her time in the United States and making it difficult for her to extend her stay or secure residency here, Wildes said.

She must leave the country again early next month. Otherwise, she faces possible deportation, authorities said.

Immigration and Customs officials said they could not discuss specifics of Teitelbaum’s case because of privacy laws.

Teitelbaum was living in Jerusalem with her husband, Rabbi Leibish Teitelbaum, 37, in 2008 when he traveled to Mumbai, India, for his work as a mashgiach, a supervisor and inspector of kosher foods.

The rabbi was studying in the Chabad Center, a Jewish religious retreat, when Muslim terrorists attacked the compound and slaughtered him and seven others. The attack was part of a coordinated onslaught throughout the city that lasted 60 hours and claimed the lives of 179 people.

One Customs official said agents have the authority to approve or deny entry into the country and impose restrictions on a case-by-case basis.

Wildes said he plans to bring a race-against-the-clock appeal to Immigration Court and fight for her under a post-9/11 law that gives the families of terrorist victims the right to a green card and permanent residency.

“Nobody in her situation should be worried about legal affairs or papers, and should not be treated in this fashion. I have faith that the immigration authorities will do the right thing,” Wildes said.

Major Hashovas Aveida – Man Returns Close to NIS 1 Million in Cash

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

A Modi’in man turned over a bag to police, a bag that he found containing money worth close to NIS 1 million. Police have been working since Sunday, trying to track down the owner of the case.

The man explains he waited a bit to see if the owner would return and when he didn’t; he took the case home, opening it and finding a large sum in foreign currency. He counted it and it amounted to close to NIS 1 million. He turned the case over to police, who are seeking the owner as well as simultaneously checking to see if the money was stolen from somewhere/someone.

Police add that another likelihood is that someone withdrew a large sum from a bank and then transferred to foreign currency. Officials add that if the money is not legal, it is unlikely that the owner will be stepping forward anytime soon.

Police add that if the money is clean and unclaimed for 90 days, the finder will become the legal owner.

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

A new process performed by hematologist, treating the recipient’s blood, addressing the antibodies, as well as specialized anti-rejection drugs permitted the procedure. Baruch Hashem, both father and daughter are recuperating.

Prof. Eitan Mor, who heads Beilinson’s transplant unit, states the breakthrough will significantly assist donors waiting for a suitable transplant donor.

BREAKING NEWS: House Passes Historic ObamaCare Bill; Democrats Erupt Into Cheers [UPDATED 11:30PM EST]

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

10:45PM EST: The House of Representatives has passed President Obama’s historic health care overhaul bill with 219 – 212 yes votes.

Thirty-four Democrats and all Republicans voted against the legislation.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made her closing argument for passage Sunday night, saying an overhaul of health care is a proposal that honors the nation’s traditions.

“After years of debate and hearing the calls of millions of Americans, we have come to this historic moment,” Pelosi said. “It’s personal for 45,000 Americans and families who have lost their loved ones each year because they were not insured.”

“It wouldn’t be possible to talk about health care without acknowledging the great leadership of Sen. Edward Kennedy who made health care his life’s work,” Pelosi continued. “In a letter to President Obama before he passed, Sen. Kennedy wrote that access to health care was the great, unfinished business of our society – that is, until today.”

UPDATE 11:18PM EST: The House votes down the Republican motion to recommit the bill.

UPDATE 11:20PM EST: The House is voting on passage of the reconciliation bill. This is the final vote of the day on health care reform.

The reconciliation bill is the package of “fixes” to the Senate health care bill that made it more attractive to balking House Democrats.

UPDATE 11:30PM EST: The House has passed the package of fixes meant to reconcile differences between the bill the House passed last year and the Senate bill it passed earlier Sunday night.

Those votes were 220-211.

PHOTOS: UJO Of Williamsburg & Met Council Collaborate On Major Food Distribution

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

[PHOTO LINK BELOW] Today the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg conducted their a major Passover distribution in conjunction with Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council).

UJO of Williamsburg has been serving the Williamsburg Hasidic community for 47 years, a community of over 70,000 people where large family size – more than eight people in a family is the rule, not the exception – contributes to a growing need for food assistance.

This Passover distribution brought thousands of pounds of fresh produce, grape juice, and frozen poultry and meat to more than 3,000 families in the Williamsburg community who live in poverty.  With the help provided, families in need will be able to focus on celebrating Passover instead of worrying about raising money to cover their food bills for the seder.

The President of the UJO, Rabbi David Niederman, said “Today’s food distribution demonstrated that community is absolutely committed to ensuring that not one family is passed over in their ability to celebrate the mitzvah Sipur Yitzias Mitzrayim (the retelling of the Jewish exodus from Egypt).

This distribution would not have been possible without the efforts and tireless work of the CEO of Met Council, Willie Rapfogel and his outstanding team of dedicated individuals at Met Council who stand ready, day in and day out for families, seniors and children who are struggling to survive in today’s harsh economy, be it with food, housing, counseling or the many other services they provide to people in crisis.

We also would like to thank one of today’s sponsors, the Mayor of Englewood and Manhattan Immigration Attorney, Michael Wildes for his generosity, and to Shomrim and the many other volunteers who were on hand to ensure everything ran smoothly and efficiently for the thousands that attended.”

Moon Identifies with Gaza

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon entered Hamas controlled Gaza on Sunday morning, calling upon Israel to end the embargo. He stated that Israel’s permitting building supplies towards the completion of a 151-unit housing complex represents nothing more than a “drop in the bucket”. Speaking in Gaza, he stated the residents of the area are living under extremely harsh conditions.

Meeting with President Shimon Peres, the UN leader acknowledged Israel’s legitimate security concerns, but stated eventually, Israel and a Palestinian state will have to live side-by-side, urging renewed talks. He added that during his meeting earlier in the day with PA Prime Minister Salim Fayyad, he urged a renewal of talks with Israel as well.

Moon used the opportunity to condemn “settlement activity” which he stated violates international law, and used the opportunity to praise Israel’s quick response and actions in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

PA Forces Limited in Abilities

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

IDF Yehuda and Shomron Division Commander Brigadier-General Nitzan Alon told Israel Radio’s Reshet Bet on Sunday morning that while PA (Palestinian Authority) forces are doing something to limit anti-Israel violence, their abilities are limited.

The senior commander stated that undoubtedly, without the PA forces, IDF troops would have more work but that said, the PA forces are limited in their abilities to halt violence, referring to the shabbos morning violence in the Shechem area in which two PA teens were killed by troops firing to defend themselves against hundreds of attackers.

Alon explained that both Israel and the PA act in line with their respective interests, and at times, there are join interests, but by and large, while the PA forces do make an effort, their capabilities are indeed limited.

PM Netanyahu Invited to the White House

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Only a few short hours before his scheduled departure for Washington to address an AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee) conference, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu received an official invitation to the White House, signaling a resumption of relations following the Ramat Shlomo diplomatic row. It would appear the prime minister’s concessions to the White House did the trick, ending the diplomatic fallout, as was reported earlier Sunday by YWN-Israel. At present, it appears the prime minister will be meeting with President Barak Obama on Tuesday.

Upon his arrival in Jerusalem, White House Mideast envoy George Mitchell delivered the invitation personally.

Preliminary scheduling changes may including cancelling a planned visit to Belgium, where he was expecting to meet with senior leaders, in exchange for meeting with policy makers on Capitol Hill.

The prime minister will be accompanied on his N. American trip by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Minister of National Infrastructure Dr. Uzi Landau and opposition leader Tzipi Livni, who will be accompanying him at the AIPAC event.

NYC Public Advocate, Transit Advocates Call For Improved Subway Security

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

The city public advocate said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority should not lay off station agents and instead save money by going after fare beaters.

Bill de Blasio said cutting MTA staffing is a safety risk that makes it easier for riders to skip out on fares, a practice that costs the agency $27 million a year.

“If the subway system is no longer safe, people won’t be riding the subways,” said de Blasio. “You know, for a long time we’ve been encouraging people to use mass transit. It’s actually started to happen and now we’re going to make the subway system less safe? That makes no sense.”

“It’s going to make the system much scarier, much less inviting, much less convenient. The booth clerks and stations agents are the eyes and ears of the subway system,” said Straphangers Campaign spokesman Gene Russianoff.

MTA officials said they are working with the NYPD to target fare beaters, but added it is an age-old problem that has existed regardless of station staffing levels.

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Deputy Minister (Yahadut HaTorah) R’ Meir Porush sent a letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman condemning the arrival on shabbos of UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon, explaining the arrival of the senior official undoubtedly required much chilul shabbos on the part of security personnel.

R’ Porush points out that in addition to exhibiting a lack of sensitivity to a large community in Israel, the move paints Israel in a bad light among nations who realize who we lack any respect towards safeguarding our national values.
