Jewish Leaders Urge Mayor to “See the Signs” in Attacks on Jews in NY

anti-semiticStanding on the spot in which a Jewish student was beaten last week in an apparent hate crime, Brooklyn elected officials and leaders will hold a press conference denouncing police inaction in the face of targeted attacks against Jewish citizens.

Last Wednesday night, 24-year-old Avrohom Wolosow was tactically surrounded and attacked by three black teens as he walked on Albany Avenue from Eastern Parkway. While chasing his assailants, Wolosow screamed for help and Jewish volunteer patrol members responded, chasing and apprehending one of the assailants who was seen running into a nearby restaurant.

Police officers responded to the volunteer patrol’s call but the lead officer permitted the assailant to leave without arrest. Witnesses were told by the lead officer and another officer that they were afraid to make arrests for fear of reprisals.

On Thursday afternoon, a 9-year-old Jewish boy on a bicycle was attacked by 4 black teens.

“More and more, our Jewish patrols are stepping up to defend the community as the police department stands down,” says Jewish Leadership Council president Barry Sugar. “When City Hall chooses politics over policing, citizens are left to stand up for themselves.”

Today’s 5:00PM press conference will begin at 339 Albany Avenue, between Eastern Parkway  and Union Street in Brooklyn. It will continue with a march down to 738 Empire Boulevard, home of Rabbi Yosef Raksin, a Brooklyn resident who was murdered while walking to synagogue prayers in Miami on August 9. Despite initial reports to the contrary, many believe he was targeted in a clear bias attack. The Raksin family is expected to make a joint statement with elected officials.

During the 2013 election season, the Jewish Leadership Council reached out to front-running mayoral candidates to outline a trend of anti-Jewish attacks documented over a five year period. Mr. De Blasio did not respond to invitations extended to him as both a candidate and as mayor. In the past year, the attacks have become more frequent and more brazen, including numerous new “knockout” attacks.

“Whether it’s a grandfather on his way to 9am prayers in Miami or a kid on his bike in Brooklyn, if it affects a small group of citizens it must be seen as a threat to all citizens,” Sugar cautions. Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 19th marks 23 years to the start of the deadly Crown Heights riots. “This administration either doesn’t remember or doesn’t care about the potential fallout of a complacent City Hall.”

  1. Now we don’t have to thnk too hard what would have happened if the volunteer patrol had, in the face of police inaction, decided to teach the animals a lessson of their own and beaten the guys to a pulp. I have no doubts noone would’ve been allowed to walk away. We’d have press conferences with DeBlasio, Sharpton etc etc. In fact we’d have every Jewish politician in NYC “denouncing” Jewish violence. We’d have had Mr. Obama “weigh in” on the events from Marthas Vineyard. But when it’s a Jewsih victim, everyone walks away! Sickening. Where are all our “politicians”?!

  2. DeBlasio is not fit for the job!
The relaxation of’Stop & Frisk’ and of policing regulations and stiffer rules and applications of policing practices show where his focus is. We should have realized this when he campaigned with his son and his pre-upsherrin head. His relaxed approach toward things show it all! The squeegies are coming back too!
We’re in trouble! I can hear him echo Dinkins’ approach during the Crown Heights riots! Said Dinkins then, “Let em vent!”
Both get a ‘D’ not only in their name but in their ability to govern the biggest city and budget in the world! And he’s only there since Jan. of this year! Oy!!!

  3. Jewish people have to say enough is enough and start fighting back. If you kill us, we’ll kill you. If you beat us up, we’ll beat you up. We will not be sheep to the slaughter anymore. We are stronger than we look.

  4. Ever had of equal rights? At least you have heard of it cause you won’t see it. As a jew you’ll be extradited from israel for protecting yourself as a black or illegal you have no law to begin with. Al rat sharpton hates us and we have no human answer to him. Our only answer is avinu shbashomayim. Being this is the situation ots obvious a jewish malitia is not yaakov method and won’t work.
