Lehava Organization Leader Bentzion Gupstein Summoned for Questioning by Police


mishtBentzion Gupstein of Lehava was summoned for questioning by Israel Police’s unit investigating nationalist crimes.

The head of the Lehava organization, Bentzion Gupstein, recently took part in a panel discussion during which he stated that in accordance to psak of the Rambam, one is required to burn down churches in Israel. Gupstein was warned that his statements would lead to his arrest. Gupstein stated that he was speaking theoretically during a halachic discussion. The rosh yeshiva and other rabbonim present, including those on the panel, condemned the statements, stating such actions are forbidden under law and in accordance with halacha today.

Gupstein stated that he is willing to sit in jail for 50 years if that is what it takes to do the correct thing.

As was predicted, Gupstein was called for questioning following his statements supporting the burning down of churches around Israel.
