Petition to Have PM Netanyahu Arrested When He Arrives in the UK Next Month

bibi2Close to 40,000 people have already signed an e-petition on the British parliament website in the hope of having Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu arrested when he arrives in the UK next month on an official visit. Those signing the petition feel the Israeli prime minister should be placed on trial for war crimes pertaining to the “massacre of over 2,000 civilians in 2014”, referring to Operation Protective Edge, the IDF counter-terrorism offensive against Hamas in Gaza.

It is reported that British law compels the government to respond since the petition received over 10,000 signatures. Should the petition reach 100,000 signatures, the petition will have to be considered for discussion in parliament.

Back in Israel, Foreign Ministry officials are playing down the significance of the e-petition, calling it nothing more than a publicity stunt.

  1. 1. The British Parliament has not passed a “Bill of attainder” (which is what the petition is demanding) for 200 years (they considered passing bills of attainder against the Nazi leaders but the Americans and Russians insisted on show trials instead). Parliament doesn’t order people arrested any more and a petitin to do so is a joke.

    2. An appropriate response would be to start an online petition to arrest the pro-terrorism advocates for aiding and abbeting terrorism.
