Jerusalem Soccer Team Adds ‘Trump’ To Its Name To Honor U.S. President

Beitar Jerusalem, one of the largest soccer clubs in Jerusalem, is planning to add “Trump” to its name to honor United States President Donald Trump.

A statement on the team’s Facebook page said it will now go by “Beitar Trump Jerusalem.”

The proposal by the club’s leadership was announced Sunday, one day ahead of a new U.S. Embassy being inaugurated in Jerusalem, fulfilling a campaign promise of Trump.

That statement reads:

“President Donald Trump, in a courageous move, recognized Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel. President Trump has shown courage, and true love of the Israeli people and their capital, and these days other countries are following his lead in giving Jerusalem its rightful status.

The football club Beitar Jerusalem, one of the most prominent symbols of the city, are happy to honor the President for his love and support with a gesture of our own. The chairmen of the club, the owner Eli Tabib and the executive manager Eli Ohana have decided to add to the club’s title the name of the American President who made history, and from now on will be called Beitar Trump Jerusalem.

We have the greatest love for the President, and it will win.”

Beitar is second in the Israeli league with one game left, and has qualified for next season’s Europa League.

The Jerusalem Post notes that the name change has to be approved by the Jerusalem Football Association. An additional obstacle may be that “Donald Trump” has been trademarked in Israel since 2008.
