What are the Rights & Privileges Received by Imprisoned Terrorists?

prisonThe Security Cabinet has instructed Minister of Public Security Yitzchak Aharonovich to cancel any and all privileges given to Hamas terrorists imprisoned in Israel. The cabinet is well aware that despite its frustration as efforts continue to locate and rescue the captive yeshiva students from Hamas captivity, the Israel Prison Authority is bound by international law and these heinous individuals must still receive a minimum level of services.

While the prisoners will continue receiving three meals daily, medical care, meetings with an attorney, newspapers and books, and daily fresh air time in a yard, some of their privileges are likely to be revoked. This may include removal of the radio and TV in their cells, canteen rights, and family visits once every two weeks.

  1. The Israelis (and Americans) prefer to treat captured terrorists as criminals. They are often put on trial and released after a sentence is served.

An alternative method would be to regard them as soldiers captured in battle who are not in uniform, who are to be immediately shot as spies. That’s why in the past, soldiers would wear regular uniforms even while working behind enemy lines, since otherwise they would be shot when captured (after torture, which was quite legal for spies back then). While that was standard procedure through World War II, most countries have rejected that, and in fact Israelis (and American) soldiers often engage in military activity without wearing readily indentifiable uniforms.

  2. and how will israel determine who is a hamas prisoner? will they give the prisoners due process and hold hearings as to the hamasity of each prisoner? this ridiculousness further illustrates that israel needs to stop treating terrorists as criminals as akuperma wrote.
