Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to present US President Trump with updated plans for a potential military strike against Iran during his upcoming visit to the United States, according to a report by NBC News citing multiple unnamed officials.
The report says Israel is increasingly alarmed by intelligence indicating that Iran is rebuilding — and possibly expanding — its ballistic missile production following the 12-day war in June. Jerusalem is also concerned that Tehran is working to restore its nuclear enrichment program, which was significantly damaged by Israeli strikes and later US attacks.
While Israel has long described Iran’s nuclear ambitions as an existential threat, officials quoted in the report say the missile program is currently viewed as the more immediate danger.
“The nuclear weapons program is very concerning. There’s an attempt to reconstitute. It’s not that immediate,” one source familiar with Israel’s planning told NBC News.
“But the threat of the missiles is very real, and we weren’t able to prevent them all last time,” another source said.
Netanyahu and Trump are expected to meet next week at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Israel declined to comment on the report.
In response, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly reiterated Trump’s firm stance, telling NBC News: “As President Trump has said, if Iran pursued a nuclear weapon, that site would be attacked and would be wiped out before they even got close.”
