Israel Expands Eastern Border Barrier, Clears Hundreds of Old Mines
Israel’s Defense Ministry says construction of the Eastern Border Security Barrier is being expanded, including the controlled removal of about 500 aging anti-tank mines from the late 1960s. The work is being done by the Israel National Mine Action Authority together with the IDF Central Command.
The project will span roughly 500 km and cost about $1.7 billion (5.5b NIS), as part of a broader strategy promoted by Defense Minister Israel Katz and IMOD Director General Amir Baram, which also includes creating a new IDF division to secure the region.
