Russia has tried to fully block WhatsApp in the country, Meta said, as authorities continue encouraging users to switch to domestically developed platforms.

WhatsApp states that this move is part of Russia’s effort to steer users toward a state-supported rival app. Russian officials have promoted a new messaging service called MAX, which state media claims is not meant for surveillance.
