Chilling news: The crisis in Eliav-Charuv

Along the Judean hills of Eretz Yisroel in the community called Eliav-Charuv, a crisis is unfolding.

For years, the local mikvah has been serving its 500 residents, most of whom are evacuees from Gush Katif. Remarkably, since it opened, many of the secular women in the neighborhood started keeping taharas hamishpacha for the first time.

But today, that center is ice-cold.

The mikvah’s heating system didn’t just glitch, a mechanical failure left the heating system completely dead and made the water virtually unusable. Besides for the showers, baths, and general steam, going into an ice-cold mikvah demands a level of mesiras nefesh few can manage.

A choice no one should have to make

Because Eliav-Charuv is relatively isolated, the community’s women now facing two impossible choices:

  1. Driving a long distance to find a working mikvah in a different city

  2. Give up on the mitzvah entirely

In a time of war when everyone wants to stay close to their families and bomb shelters, traveling long distances at night isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a safety risk. So for many, if the local mikvah isn’t warm, the mitzvah simply doesn’t happen.

The promise

The mechanical experts have visited the mikvah and said that the entire boiler room needs a $25,000 overhaul to get the heat back on.

It’s a big number, but it comes with an even bigger promise.

The Ya’avetz (Rav Yaakov Emden) famously said:  “It’s the obligation of every community to build a warm mikvah and one who does so will merit long life.”

We can fix this by next week

We are relying on people like you who understand the significance of this mitzvah to help us raise the $25,000 needed to replace the boiler and restore taharas hamishpacha in Eliav-Charuv.
