A United flight nearly collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter Tuesday night near John Wayne Airport in California.
• United Flight 589, a Boeing 737-800, was on final approach around 8:40 p.m. and missed the helicopter by a few hundred feet.
• The aircraft received a traffic collision alert, known as a “resolution advisory.”
• Air traffic control warned the flight about the helicopter, which had crossed into the plane’s flight path.
• The plane adjusted altitude and landed safely; the FAA is investigating the incident.
