A panel of federal judges has blocked Alabama from using a newly drawn congressional map in the November midterm elections, ruling that the districts unfairly discriminated against Black voters.
The decision halts an effort to redraw one of the state’s majority-Black congressional districts, though Alabama is expected to appeal the ruling.
The judges wrote that they could not require Alabama voters to cast ballots under a map “tainted by intentional race-based discrimination,” while also warning against voter confusion so close to the election.
