NEW IN MERON: Modern, Kohanim-Friendly Restroom Facility Opens Near Rashbi’s Kever

A major upgrade for the hundreds of thousands of mispallelim who visit Meron each year was officially unveiled this week with the opening of a new, modern, and fully accessible restroom facility near the main entrance to the kever of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.

The project, completed after years of planning and construction, was led by the Ministry of Religious Services under Director-General Rabbi Yehuda Avidan, with assistance from the Safra Foundation in Israel, the Regional Planning Committee, and the Committee of Five overseeing the Rashbi site.

The new facility replaces the temporary restroom system that had served visitors until now and includes dozens of spacious, modern, and fully equipped restroom stalls designed to better accommodate the large crowds that visit Meron throughout the year, especially during peak periods.

Extensive infrastructure work was carried out as part of the project, significantly improving the surrounding area and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Special attention was given to the needs of Kohanim. The location was selected following consultation with Harav Dovid Shmidel zt”l and representatives of Asra Kadisha, who carefully examined potential sites in the area. The structure was built using halachically approved methods, including the construction of protective arches, allowing Kohanim to access the facility. A dedicated pathway was also created connecting the building to the existing Kohanim route.

The project was supervised by Asra Kadisha and members of the Committee of Five headed by Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, Rav of the Kosel and Holy Sites.

In addition, the new building was designed to be fully accessible for individuals with disabilities and those with mobility challenges, ensuring that all visitors can utilize the facility comfortably and with dignity.
