TRAFFIC ALERT – Repairs to Conrail Crossing in Lakewood Causing Traffic Detours


crail.jpgMotorists near Main Street in Lakewood will encounter detours as the state Department of Transportation begins repair work today on the Conrail railroad crossing.

Route 88, also known as Main Street, will be closed between Monmouth Avenue and Park Avenue South beginning 5 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday.

DOT officials said the department, in its $173,000 project, is replacing the existing tracks, installing a concrete grade crossing, and repaving the asphalt approaches. The work is weather permitting. The work is part of the department’s railroad grade crossing safety program to repair and improve 30 crossings annually.

Traffic on the Monmouth Avenue side will take Monmouth Avenue to Second Street, then to Park Avenue South before turning on to Route 88.

Traffic on the Park Avenue South side will take Park Avenue to Second Street, then to Monmouth Avenue before turning on to Route 88.

Truck traffic will use Route 88 eastbound to South Clinton Avenue, then to Cedar Bridge Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue before returning to Route 88.

  1. Glad they are FINALLY fixing those tracks and the approaches. Numerous vehicles have been damaged over the years by the huge potholes that surround the tracks on Route 88 near NPGS.
