Los Angeles Rabbonim Rule That No ‘Kashering’ Needed For Those Who Used Doheny Meats

doeThe following the is the latest ruling in the Doheny Meat scandal, reported extensively on YWN:

At a meeting attended by Rabbonim of both major Kashrus Supervisory agencies, the RCC and Kehilas Kosher, regarding Doheny Glatt Kosher Meat Market, it was unanimously decided that there is no Halachic need to Kasher utensils whether in private homes, business establishments or Caterers.

Rabbi Elchonon Tauber

Rabbi Shlomo Klein

Rabbi Yosef Shusterman

Rabbi Nachum Sauer

Rabbi Ezra Dweck

Rabbi Gershon Bess

As was previously reported, Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz, the well known philanthropist from Los Angeles, has purchased Doheny Glatt Kosher Meats from its owner, Mike Engelman.

Rechnitz’s father-in-law is HaRav Yisroel Belskey, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah V’Daas and Posek for the OU Kashrut Division, with whom the rabbinical authorities for the RCC consulted with. Rabbi Belsky had issued a ruling permitting the use of products purchased from the store prior to the suspension of the certification.

  1. If everything is so hunky-dory with Doheny meats, so why did the RCC take the Hechsher off, bichlal? Everything is fine. The meat they ate at 2:59 was great. No need to Kasher any pots. Why the whole tumult to begin with? Something here, stinks to high heaven!!! Sounds like they’re covering something up. When consumers continue to let establishments off the hook like this, the same scandal will happen again & again & again!!! You people NEVER learn! Good luck!

  2. what is the heter that permits people who purchased possibly or vaidi tainted meat from kashering their utensils?

  3. Why isn’t Rabbi Avrohom Teichman, the head of Kehila Kosher, among the above signatures? He is the only rabbi in the kehila kashrus anyway so how can it be unanimous if his name isn’t there?

  4. “Not getting involved”, there was likely some treif meat sold, but the majority was kosher.

How can you say he was let off the hook? he had to sell the business at a discount!

Lazerc, what is the requirement to kasher utensils which probably did not come into contact with non-kosher meat?

  5. its called “eino ben yomo” and its a pretty basic principle in yoreh deah….combine then with a safek to begin with and voila! no need to kasher. But thanks for all the suspiscion chevra

  6. In Monsey, Lakewood, etc other heimish communities they would have considered the right thing to do is to kasher their utensils.

  7. yudel says:
“In Monsey, Lakewood, etc other heimish communities they would have considered the right thing to do is to kasher their utensils”
wrong. these rabbonim themselves are heimish, Rabbi Tauber is chasidish< so is rabbi klein and rabbi dwek

Here we are in Sefira, mourning the loss of 24,000 talmidei chachamim who died because “lo nahagu kavod zeh la zeh” and you fire off an asinine comment like that. Will you ever learn?! Stop tearing klal yisrael apart already! ENOUGH!!!

  9. “not getting involved”- why don’t you just live up to your name and not get involved!!!!!!!!!!
You obviously don’t live in LA and know very little about whats happening or about halacha, its much more complicated than you can probably understand. keep your nose buried in NY politics!

  10. Not getting involved:
You’re the one who never learns! All your comments here on yeshiva world show you don’t ever get the whole story or read the whole article before blabbering!!

  11. spectrum, if you would have read the story you would see that khilla WAS involved (for some reason).

1…. I would suggest you open a shulchan aruch and learn some halocha before running your mouth off.

  12. There was no non-kosher meat to begin with. This whole scandal was about the owner bringing in KOSHER MEAT while the mashgiach wasn’t looking. This meat wasn’t certified by the RCC and he is a rasha and gazlan for doing this but the meat was still kosher so no need to kasher anything – even according to all the Lakewood and Monsey frummies.

This is very different than what happened in Monsey where the guy brought in vaday treif chicken.

  13. some of you seem to be missing the facts,
(Mark Levin, Yudel ,Not getting involved etc)
so I’ll fill them in for you.
    1. the status of what was in the 8-10 boxes that Mike was caught bringing in twice is still unknown.( he told Rechnitz it was not glatt meat, – not that we trust mike anymore anyway)

    2. these boxes were less than 10 percent of is total stock at any given time.

    3. this new headline that kashering is not needed is just reaffirming the psak of Harav Belsky that while the smuggling was still unknown the food is mutar, ( which is bases on roiv and kol deparish etc.) but now it would be assur because it is known and that halacha cannot apply.

    4. After investigations were complete, the only lapse of the mashgiach not being there was those couple of minutes in the morning. This was the only stuff that was smuggled in.

    5. Rabbi Avrohom Teichman IS the only rabbi in kehila kosher so yes it is strange to say this was a unanimous agreement and that Kehila was involved if Teichman IS kehila!! and he didnt sign it.

if you have any more questions , feel free to ask , but PLEASE! DONT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS AND START BASHING OUR RABBONIM!! THE RCC IS MADE UP OF OVER 70 RABBONIM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!
    see http://rccvaad.org/about

  14. its actually very clear in shulchan aruch yd 110:5, nolad hasofeik achar shaporush mehamekulin (store), bec medoraiso batul brov, and only kavua midrabonon, so the drobonon is only from when it became known, but anything in your hand is even mdarobonon mutar because purchased before the traifos was known.

  15. Spectrum,

Please leave me out of your rant. I know SoCal just fine thank you very much. If Rav Belsky said something, that’s perfectly fine with me. If Rabbi Tauber paskened something, that’s perfectly fine with me to.

Why should R’ Teichman sign off on anything RCC???? They “love” each other soooooooo much!! Besides I refer you to the story where it says khilla was involved.

  16. Mark levin:
Firstly, I must appologize for including your name because I just reread your comment that you wrote in reference to yudel and I must have thought you said” we” instead of “they”. I appologize.
(At the time I was shocked, because u usually write sensible things)

Secondly, my question again was as follows. For whatever reason kehila decided to mix in. Kehila is solely runned by rabbi teichman and he is the kehila exclusive rabbinic authority. That being said, how can the article here or the letter say it was a unanimous desision between RCC and kehila if rabbi Teichman AKA Kehila didn’t sign it? Does he not agree? Is he hiding info the RCC doesn’t know??

( I say this because the inspector gave him the videos and info first, acouple days before he (teichman) himself told the RCC about it. Not sure why it had to be like that…)

  17. There is the appearence of a conflict of interests when the rav who they “consult” regarding the kashruth of meat purchased from this distributor under its prior ownership just happens to be the Shver of the new owner who obviously wants to allay the anxieties of his new customers about the kashruth of their recent purchases. With no disrespect to Rav Belsky who seems qualified to address the issue, there are plenty of rabbonim with no dog in the hunt who could also have consulted

  18. Gadolhadorah:
When the RCC asked rav Belsky, there was no talk of rechnitz buying doheny. He probably would have laughed at the thought of it. Only a week later when the dinamics changed and the rabbonim asked him to buy it he went ahead with it.

  19. To gadolhadorah
HELLO!!! This is rav belsky we’re dealing with, not some scam con-artist!

“With no disrespect to Rav Belsky who seems qualified to address the issue, ”

Sorry, but he doesnt need your haskama
