UPDATED – Frum Man Stabbed Overnight in Lakewood

pd car3.gif[UPDATE IN EXTENDED ARTICLE] At approximately 12:45AM, a 45-year-old man was stabbed as he was walking into his Forest Avenue home – in the heart of Lakewood’s Jewish community. Hatzolah Paramedics from Lakewood Hatzolah were scrambled to the scene at 308 Forest Avenue, and rushed the man to the Jersey Shore Trauma Center where he was listed in stable but critical condition, R”L.

Highly credible sources tell YWN that the Lakewood PD is searching for 2 black males, and suspect that this was a robbery attempt, and not a bias incident – although the LPD has not yet labeled this crime.

Detectives worked aggressively throughout the night, and are searching for additional clues.

With tensions running high in Lakewood, this troubling incident comes on the heels of the recent rash of assaults in Lakewood starting in October 2007, when a Lakewood man (Rabbi Moskowitz) was brutally assaulted by an African-American male with a baseball bat, critically injuring him; reported HERE on YWN.

37-year-old Lee Tucker was arrested by the LPD a few weeks after the brutal assault, and was indicted in min-February. His charges included attempted murder, possession of a weapon, a bat, for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of that weapon

Following that baseball-bat attack, the incidents continued – with the most recent YWN article on May 25 titled “Lakewood’s Third Assault in Four Weeks“.

In that article YWN wrote the following:

“Being that this is Lakewood’s third assault in four weeks, and no arrests have been made, YWN reached out to Lakewood Deputy Mayor, Meir Lichtenstein and Lakewood Committeeman Menashe Miller to hear what they had to say.

“The police department is working on the case”, Lichtenstein said, “but we both strongly feel that “Civilian Patrol” would be a major asset to the Township.”

Both Lichtenstein and Miller understand that there has been resistance in the police department to a Civilian Patrol idea, and said that “we strongly encourage the leadership & the rest of the Lakewood PD – to work closely with those who are gracious enough to volunteer their time to help keep our streets safer.”

YWN will post additional details regarding the Monday night stabbing as soon as they are available to us.

UPDATE 3:30PM EST: ****IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE LAKEWOOD VAAD****

Last night a Yungerman was seriously assaulted on Forest Avenue near 3rd Street. B”H he seems to be out of immediate life-threatening danger, but his injuries are quite serious.

It is believed that the attackers were 2 African-American males. One was approximetly 30-years-old and tall, the other was shorter. Both were wearing black shirts.

The Lakewood police believe that robbery was the motive, and have asked for the communities assistance in trying to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

If you observed any suspicious activity in the general area of the attack, please call the Lakewood Police Department – ask for Detective Wexler.

  1. And as person who lives in crown heights between a very racialy diverse to say the least community these actions of stabings dont even happen here..

lakewood has serious problems and it shows even if you run away from the city the city will follow you!!!!!!

  2. Lakewood has one of the highest crime rates in NJ. Bricktown has one of the lowest crime rates. Maybe people should start moving to Brick? (It might be even closer to Yeshiva then Westgate).

  3. May he have a speedy and complete Refuah Shelaima! REMEMBER!! This too is a wake up call from Hashem for us to do REAL Teshuva! Wake up Yidden!

  4. couls someone explain to me why we need a civilian watch. listen, its not our job to protect the streets!how much do we pay in taxes c,if u need more cops get them, pay for it, mabe its more important than repaving roads.

  5. This is crazy…. I think Yeshiva needs to inforce the Civ. Watch program… Then the olam would stell tzu. I can say one thing, in Boro Park they would of cought this guy. Either on CCTV or….. We need to catch a couple of these guys and teach them a lesson. Maybe we should get dogs..

  6. Great idea #8…Here in baltimore we have the NWCP – NorthWest(Baltimore)Citizens Patrol. It is made up of hundreds of Frum Baltimore residents and is instramental in keeping our community Bezras Hashem, safe.

  7. civilian potrol is a bad idea you are making yourself a target just like a cop is, it might make the town a bit safer but it will put the volonteers in harms way.i think theres should be a civilian potrol but with out the oficial label of civilian potrol.in this case they are not targets of the perps. and the legal system should someone have to use force against a perp. (which you know will happen)

  8. The way we and the all Jewish Communities to STOP or SOLVE this crime is to start putting cameras all over our neighborhood (after all we have nothing to hide).
In NYC every other building has a camera. Who would do anything if there is a camera around?

  9. the state police want to charge us bec Lakewood is a targeted drug zone. I would like to see some hard figures on what the state troopers have done to fight drugs and real crime in Lkwd. not issuing tickets of which they get a %

  10. #8 asks why do you need a civilian patrol? The police rely on them to be their extra “eyes and ears” to report trouble, especially since they are understaffed and often busy in high-crime neighborhoods. Take Baltimore, where the Northwest Citizen Patrol (with the staunch support of all the roshei yeshivo and rabbonim in town) has for 25 years reversed and maintained the frum neighborhood’s low crime rate by virtue of hundreds of kehilla volunteers patrolling the streets every night (not all at once!). Because the patrollers are visible, would-be criminals know to stay away. Yes, it is our job.

  11. Having civil patrol is not a bad idea, it exist all over, and not just in the Jewish communities, but these people have to remember to not take things into their own hands, unless it’s for extreme circumstances. For instance you can’t go ahead and beat a suspect to a pulp, (yes i know how it feels when someone does something terrible so you want to have your way with them), but it’s not worth jail time or a lawsuit. I also think they should give some sort of self defense class as well, yes when a guy has a gun, your kicks will probably not usually work, unless you’re experienced. But at least we can give the people a fighting chance, even if it’s small it’s something.

  12. omy is all i can mutter. whats going on in lakewood is insane and more people keep moving there may mashiach come really quickly bimheira viyameinu AMEN

  13. civilian patrol well publicized and connected could help to stem this tide of racial tension hightened by the onslought of these three frum yeshivalite. also, until things are put into place, no bochur should walk by himself no matter how much a talmud chochim he may be . the gemorah says that a talmud chochim should not walk outside by himself at night, because of mashchisim whom are envious of them and wish to harm them.well, lakewood has known mashchisim in their midst, and no bochur should walk alone especially at night.

  14. What is going on in Lakewood these days is nothing short of an outrage. Firstly, to make a couple of bucks HUNDREDS of homes and apartments are rented out to people that none of these slumlords would ever have living anywhere near them. These people are committing crimes ranging from the petty to the violent. Letters from Gedolim and even the letter from Rav Eliyashiv Shlit”a that came out today will mean zero to these “investors” and will be pushed right under the rug. The culture of doing anything and everything to make a buck is a very sad tale on the state of affairs in Lakewood. Where is the adherance to Halacha? Where is the following of Mussar? Where is the Bein adam lachaveiro? What about the fact that there is now blood on these peoples hands and it could chas veshalom have been worse? Yes, it is true that downtown Lakewood is finished, dangerous & downright uncomfortable for anyone to walk after dark (and in the daytime too, actually), but it is really spreading quickly from there. It is time for some sort of leadership to step up. Unfortunately, what the Gadol Hador says is not going to mean much….Something is very wrong here..

  15. civilian patrol works. Baltimore is one of the safest frum kehillos in the country because of the NWCP. l’maisa it’s proven it works. The frum volunteers are not in harms way- they are simply the eyes and ears of the police. they do not make any arrests. they drive around patroling and notify the police when there is a concern. there is one patrol car that shuttles around an officer so that he can be there within minutes. if you want to be safe, start a patrol and stop kvetching about paying taxes that should be covering this. no matter how many cops are out there, it does not compare to having fellow yidden who care about the kehilla patroling it.

  16. LCSPis a great concept. The question is,is it being implemented properly. I can’t imagine that they have an over abundance of volunteers clamoring to join. Yet I know three people who sent in applications and where never contacted! One fellow even sent his app. in two times. It seems that there needs to be a better organizational system put in place. Don’t get me wrong, kudos to LCSP! Its a tremendous chesed that they perform. Perhaps they are short on administrative staff. Anyone wanna volunteer? Refuah Sheliema.

  17. bs”d

Do the people in Lakewood know that if there will be an Arab State in the heart of Eretz Yisroel the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jews are in danger. No different than Sderot. How is that connected to the recent attacks in Lakewood and Crown Heights you may ask?

Perhaps, the rise of antisemitism and hate crimes based on race is correlated to the rise Islamic fundamentalism in African American communities. Appeasing Islamic fundamentalism has empowered hate crimes all over the world and has been a factor in the rise of antisemitism.

What is the point of learning all the mesachtos on property rights while not speaking out regarding the total disregard to property rights by the gov’t of Israel towards the residents of Gush Katif. I just read that these farmers are obligated to pay off their Arab workers for having lost their jobs due to the expulsion. I also understand that they have to pay off their mortgage. Their compensation no where reflects the value of their homes and their parnassa. Not to mention the tremendous emotional pain and suffering that is as raw as it was when the expulsion happened. Where is Lakewood’s voice of sharing in their brothers pain in Eretz Hakodesh?

Will Lakewood take any concrete action to do anything to prevent another Gush Katif in Judea and Samaria other than a call to say tehillim? Isn’t hishtadlus the halacha alongside Tefilla? Does it take more incidences of antisemitism to wake up Lakewood from their dream of insularity of the evils of the world.

Let us be deserving of G-d’s protection by not allowing our fellow Jews life to be hefker.

This is a call for the Rabbanim to validate the struggle of the settlers and publicly state our entitlement to the Land.

  18. Since it is so easy to make an Issur & call it a Takanah, why not do the following:
    1) Make it Asur to own investment properties in Lakewood. The only property one is allowed to own in Lakewood is where he lives.
2)All properties that are to be sold or rented should be done through the Vaad Hakohol. This second point is already in effect in Ofakim for many years.

  19. To #27-dave375….The letter is posted on this site now. Check it out. Don’t worry, everyone will find a reason why it does not pertain to them. I’m surprised that the “investors” haven’t flown out to Israel and demonstrated at R’ Eliyasiv Shlit”a’s home!! V’hameivin Yavin! The dollar is more important than anything a Gadol would have to say….right? Mamish a disgrace!!
