January 5, 2011 12:39 am at 12:39 am #1218997bein_hasdorimParticipantMBD is the best as of now, cuz he’s got a rich voice & he’s got bass.
I don’t really enjoy high pitched voices which tend to give me a headache after a while.
Mordechai Ben David, Avraham Fried(man)
Yaakov Shwekey, Gad Elbaz, theres more….
January 5, 2011 1:30 am at 1:30 am #1218999QueenParticipantBORUCH LEVINE!
You can’t get more real and ‘hartzig’ music than him. No shtick, just real beautiful voice singing with feeling.

(over taste and smell, one cannot argue)

Probably Chazan Helfgott.

In this order!!!! Shwekey is definitely the first! 🙂
January 5, 2011 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #1219016Git MeshigeParticipantWhat bothers me are some of the clueless comments on this thread. I am 36 years old and I grew up with the real deal. Mordechai ben David ( an amazing voice, composer, and maven ) Shlomo Carlebach – unreal, Bentzion Shenker and David Werdyger. These were flawless artists that understood music and were able to convey their talent to the public. Today all you young folk are in love in Shwekey. Why, because he reaches insanely high notes. But after a while you can get sick and tired of it. He does not compose songs has very little haavana. Todays “singers” are just singing. They have no understanding. Even MBD today has lost his touch because he is influeneced by the ignorant hamon am.
January 5, 2011 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #1219017Todros GimpelParticipantEither Chazzan Yaakov Shtark or Chazzan Yaakov Lemmer
January 5, 2011 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #1219018oomisParticipantVocally, Helfgott is the Pavarotti of this generation. There are secular Jews who have phenomenal voices also.

Best singers (beat, warmth): MBD, Gertner
Best composers (today): Moshe Goldman A”H, Shlomo Carlebach A”H, Ben Zion Shenker. These were consistently producers oh high quality heimishe niggunim.
Most niggunim on records today have no musical quality and are garbage – justr beat & music accompaniment.

January 6, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am #1219023deiyezoogerMember“Too bad he changed his style”
thats the problam with every singer, when they stop being themself and start to copy others, so you are not yourself and not the person you trying to copy.

January 6, 2011 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #1219026eclipseMemberThe singers are under pressure to change/New Age their style by concert promoters that have to keep outdoing themselves until everyone has turned themselves inside-out.
February 28, 2011 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #1219028shalom_euniceMemberFor me, I think Yaakov Shwekey is the best so far… He knows to Whom he sings to and about and that is to The almighty Hashem!

Agreed comments such as yours are definetly clueless and not needed. Shwekey knows what he is singing and is one of the greatest.

March 2, 2011 2:34 am at 2:34 am #1219033Dave HirschParticipantMoshe Laufer’s take: “I doubt that someone like Fried or Mordechai Ben David will ever come up. I don’t think that they currently have any heirs, after so many years of such dominance. I work with many singers, but for now they have no replacement, in terms of their performance and emotion – they are really the greatest ever.”
