HI! I haven’t posted in a really long time!! (Our filter doesn’t allow YWN anymore 🙂 we’re away for yom tov now where the filter does allow it 🙂 So good to see this forum is (was) up and running again!

Dx3-not sure if you already made your decision regarding the omnipod but I wanted to say that I wear mine on my stomach and lower back (just like cofeefan !) I’ve tried it on my thighs but they say absorption is not as good as stomach and back. It also feels a bit shaky over there…

As far as carrying the pdm. I usually don’t go out Shabbos but if I do I don’t usually eat so its not a problem. When I am going away for a meal or to a simcha I try to carry it with a shinui (however you spell that!)for example, in my tights…

too young for D- Firstly, welcome aboard. Sorry that you have to join but you’re definitely in the right place!

When you say every time she eats she shoots up, What do you mean? Is the 250-300 2 hours after eating or 4 hours? Does it come down on its own or do you need to do a correction bolus?

It would be normal for her numbers to go up within 2 or 3 hours of a meal but it should come down on its own if a bolus was given to cover the carbs…give us some more details so we can be more helpful 🙂

congrats on the A1c! Keep it up!

oomis- Usually 30-45 grams of carb per meal is recommended.

Reb- Oy! I know how you feel it happens to the best of us…dont worry your’e not alone.

I had the same thing a few weeks ago where i was constantly low and then after four weeks of that I switched int o the “high mode” without me changing any of my habits or anything… it was very frustrating…what I did was re-adjusted my basals to what they were before the lows and eventually it went back to normal….Yes. it is very frustrating but hey! that’s what makes good numbers so exciting! 🙂

It just shows us how appreciative we need to be for the rest of our body’s normal function..imagine if it would be up to us to keep our heart beat normal?! Baruch Hashem!

Hatzlacha and I hope your numbers get bettter very very soon! Let us know how you’re doing!

    Rooting for yoU!

dx3- 45 carbs per cup is correct..

Strange that that would happen …Did you really measure out the three cups or just estimated?

metoo-Hi! It’s probably normal if you’re generally not very active 😉 Does it bring it down to normal if you exercise when you’re high? cuz i find that when im normal it brings it down if i dont use a temp basal (even then it drops), but if im high it wont necessarily come down too much…part of the fun!! 🙂

coffee-its really interesting that you go low six hours later…you always see that pattern?

I cant imagine why that would be….

You know whats funny, I used to love to be low cuz then I would eat everything I really wanted to eat…at this point I hate the feeling of being low so much its not worth it even if I can eat everything in the candy store!!!!!!!

    Anyone else feel the same?!

reb- I dont do such rigorous exercise otherwise I probably would drop really low and would get frustrated cuz I would have to eat the house and defeat the purpose of the exercise :), I go brisk walking so I dont drop so low just a bit…I am gonna start to do a temp basal and see if that helps keep me more stable..

reb and coffee- I agree with you too about keeping numbers good rather than bringing them down.. I think it has more to do with motivation bec its easier to be motivated to continue something good than to work on something to make it good… and perhaps have to change some habits somewhere along the way….whadya think? Either way its worth the effort 🙂

So my new thing is that I exercise 45 minutes every morning and guess what??!! My numbers have been great bh!! I really think its making control a lot easier. For example, yesterday i my highest number was 93 and lowest was i think 77!! (I also went low overnight but im not sure if it was from the exercise bec i exercised in the morning…) Im gonna give it another night or so and then ill decide if i need to lower the overnight basals when im religious about working out…

Oh! and about my husband being a pro, so this shabbos I lit lecht and then I realized that I hadnt changed my pod yet (it was the third day already)I know that technically i cld have done it but my husband was still home so he did all the muktzah stuff for me(pressed the buttons filled the pod etc) and I just put on the pod..yup he’s learning! 🙂

metoo- LOL congrats on finishing your first box of lancets!!

In the beginning I was religious about changing mine so I finished a lot the first year after that its been downhill… 🙂

Also, I am not licensed yet but I am almost finished my degree in the field (I dont want to specifiy here because its a bit too public for that) but if you want I can help you out ..I do have quite a bit experience counseling type 1 diabetics….. maybe the mods can get us in touch if your interested… (no pressure!) 🙂

hi reb- You’re right 8.3 isnt too good. Do you ever upload your pump and try to figure out where the problem is? Like I mentioned above, ive been working at a ped endocrinology office for the past while ..ive seen many uploads and bh been able to figure out where lots of the highs were coming from…do you want me to take a look at your upload? maybe we can get in touch if you want to.. Hello Rosh-Welcome to our group! I was diagnosed when I was 18 years old (im 22 now and just got married :)! I don’t really know what its like to be diagnosed as a young child but I do work (intern) at a pediatric endocrinology office now and I see lots of kids with type 1. From my experience it seems that kids that are more independant about their Diabetes are more succesful at keeping good numbers. Of course in the begining parents need to be involved etc..to help teach the child but eventually when kids are so to speak “in charge” of their own diabetes they dont feel like a sick child.

If you want you can get in touch with me if you need help or advice ill LOVE to give some.

Always remember that Hashem doesnt test someone with something they cannot handle! Just be strong and know that everything is for the best! 🙂

    Hatzlacha Rabba!

csilver- Hi! I am on the omnipod so I can’t say too much about the other pumps but when I was deciding between pumps my doc advised me not to base my decision on the integrated CGM since it is not very accurate…. just thought you’d want to know that. Also, the sensor for the CGM isnt that big- you could wear both a pump and the sensor at the same time without looking extra bulky cause of it.

Regarding shabbos, I press buttons with a shinui. I also try not to press extra buttons whenever possible.

Whatever decision you make it should be the right one and one that will help your daughter live a long and healthy life Bez’h! 🙂

    HELLO EVERYONE!!!

sorry I haven’t been around lately ..been busy bh! 🙂

Looks like Yom tov does the same thing for all of us 🙂

Coffee- oy! I know the feeling..it happens to me every so often. I go to bed at a good number and wake up in the 200’s for no apparent reason! I usually end up adjusting my basals but I think that from the time you change basals it takes about a day or two until you see results-dunno why. – Dont worry so much about the A1c so much- if this is only happening for a couple of days and you’ve been okay the rest of the time it wont change it drastically. keep trying!!!! You’ll feel better soon iyh! 🙂

Princess- Hows the aftermath of yom tov? Did you get out of the 400 zone????!!!! Rooting for ya!!

    YoelYitzchak- Welcome aboard!! 🙂

Wow! I have never heard of a dog trained to detect low BG’s that is SO interesting!! How long do you have the dog for? did you get it right after you were diagnosed with D?

About eating on Yom Kippur- I dont think you should worry too much about what people think- if someone happens to “catch” you in mid of eating or drinking something and you feel uncomfortable you can just explain yourself… unless you keep your D a secret (but it doesnt sound like it) Also, maybe instead of eating just drink juice or something since that takes quicker and your less likely to get caught chomping on food on Yom Kippur and feeling uncomfortable 🙂

cofee- about the sunburn- try alo vera it works for most people at least to relieve the burning and itching…

I would say to have your feed it checked out by a doc-its probably not anything to worry about but it doesnt hurt to have make sure!

princess- yup! you gotta just keep giving insulin. iF that’s what your body needs you havta do it..unless you can stick to really low carb :)))) (not an easy one! 🙂 OR maybe try increasing your basal rate- this way you wont FEEL like your taking as much insulin because your not actually programming that much insulin every time you eat..I dont really like the idea though cuz then you end up going low more often..arrrgghhh, hate the feeling!

Here: I posted this on the diabetes support group, not sure if you read it..

prediabetes is not necessarily a sentence for diabetes. If one is very careful to keep their sugar level low they can avoid getting diabetes. A proper diet would include none or at least very minimal concentrated sweets, whole grains as opposed to refined grains, fiber, lots of veggies and protein. Also, exercise is a key step in lowering blood sugars! Certain foods are also said to help lower blood sugars in prediabets and Type 2 diabetes..some of them are avoado, cinnamon, and oatmeal (which also lowers cholesterol)

“If you have prediabetes, you are at a 50 percent increased risk for heart disease or stroke, so your doctor may wish to treat or counsel you about cardiovascular risk factors, such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.”- The reason for this is becuase someone with type 2 diabetes is a @risk for all of the above IF they dont control their sugars..prediabetes is a risk for diabetes so if your at risk for diabetes your also 50% at risk for the complications that come along with diabetes! keeping your blood sugars low is definitely a key step in avoiding diabetes and IT CAN BE DONE! Many people have succeeded in avoiding getting diabetes and having to take meds and insulin.

    Hatzlacha!!

Gamzi- welcome aboard!!! So glad you joined! Youll love it here!!!

I just started on the omnipod about a month and a half ago and I have never noticed anything like you mentioned….

Two things I can think of though:

    1) Did you switch pumps or is this your first pump? cuz usually when they start you out on the pump they give you a lower basal rate than you had before with the slow release insulin so it is possible that you just need to increase your basal to something closer to what it was beforehand…I had to do that a week or two after I began on the omni

    2) another thing I can think of is that maybe you were out in the sun too much and your insulin went bad 🙁

How’s it going otherwise with the omni? are you happy with it?

Also, feel free to tell us a bit about yoursellf and read back a couple of pages so you can “meet” all of us 🙂
