  • in reply to: Why don't struggling families move out of NY? #777808

Both my spouse and I are from out of town. We are constantly thinking about moving out of Brooklyn.

The fact is although rent/mortgage is likely to be much cheaper out of town, chinuch costs are at least double. Who can afford multiple tuitions in a small community where there is a much smaller base for raising funds. The schools are also less likely to give serious tuition reductions.

I will follow this thread to see if anyone has any solutions to these issues.

I have an ipod touch and I use the extended password option. My wife has half the password and I have the other half. Under the restrictions option you can turnoff wifi. You can also block turn off you tube and the internet browser app called safari. You can download the free k9 filtered browser from the app store. You can also set restrictions on apps, tv shows and movies, or turn them off totally.

All of these protections are the minimum for a frum person. That being said why should a teenager have their own device, it is such an incredible time waster.

On the other hand it can be a very useful and powerful tool when used properly. For the music and shiurim, you can get many other mp3 players. Even if all of the internet issues were taken care of, I think the temptation to waste too much time is too great.

the same question applies to the manufacturers of telephones that some people use to speak loshon hora or other d’vorim assurim.

The answer is – that it depends if they get s’char for the good that these devices can do. If there is good such as kiruv.com or aish.com or any of the other myriad of Torah websites, tyhen they should ghet s’char and converswely get punished when people use them for negative things. Personally I think that they get neither s’char nor onesh for selling / manufacturing a neutral device.

These devices were created neutral, neither good nor bad. If individual people use them for good for harbotzas torah or parnossah then it’s good. If other people succumb to their yetzer hora, why is the manufacturer or seller liable?

It is incumbent upon every individual to accept personal responsibility for their actions. If your yetzer hora is strong in these areas then distance yourself and educate yourself about the necessary safeguards. Actually that’s true for everyone.

It is incumbent upon our chachomim and yeshivos to educate the next generation on how to deal with these terrible nisyonos. Burying one’s head in the sand is denial. The internet is here and it’s here to stay. We have to find a way to deal with it.

Is this electric? Can it be used on Shabbos?

in reply to: leaving shul early? daven earlier! #703705

Fact is Tefilla B’kavvana is min hatorah. Tefillah b’tzibbur is a d’rabannan. Many people find that davening in a fast minyan precludes them from davening with kavvanah. So they daven what they can b’tzibbur and then they have to leave and catch upo with kavvanah when they are able to.

Many people daven 3 times a day in a way that is 100% good d’rabannan but with no kavvanah. So they are mekayyem the d’rabbanann but leaving out the d’oraysa.

Apart from which I must mention that I am envious of the OP for whom observing and criticizing other yidden seem to be the biggeest issues he has. Worry less about what other people are doing concentrate on imoproving yourself. At the very least try and find a limmud z’chus forn those who must leave early.

this is plagiarism and it is not proper to quote this without attributing the source. Not only is is unethical from the terms of the secular world where people who have passed off others work as their own have been fired, but Chazal were there first.

    ?? ????? ??? ??? ????? ???? ????? ?????

“Someone who says something in the name of one who said it – brings redemption to the world.”

This is printed in a a book called Frumspeak which was published by Aronson.

That being said it was funny to remember this old joke.
