UPDATED: Modi’in Illit: Avreich Niftar While Making Tefillin – Toxic Fumes May Have Killed Him

A 38-year-old avreich working in a tefillin tannery on Chatam Sofer Street in Modi’in Illit was niftar on Monday morning. The factory is set up in a small shelter/storage facility in the community.

The young man collapsed and despite the quick EMS response and resuscitation efforts, he did not make it.

It appears that he may have inhaled a combination of toxic chemicals including sulfuric acid, leading to the lethal chain of events. The first responders were also affected by inhaling the toxic fumes, and they were transported to Sheba Medical Center by Magen David Adom.

The niftar is survived by his wife and eight children, the youngest being four-months-old.

UPDATE: The Modi’in Illit avreich who was niftar in a tefillin factory in that community on Monday morning has been identified a Reuven Nadel z”l, a 35-year-old father of eight. He was a resident of Ohr Hachaim Street in the community.

As was reported earlier in the day, it appears two chemicals combined as he was working in the tefillin tannery, resulting in the release of a fatal cloud of smoke that seems to have led to his death. He was pronounced dead on the scene following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.

Six Ichud Hatzalah and MDA personnel were taken to Sheba Medical Center for an exam after they too inhaled the poisonous substance.

The niftar was the son of Dayan Rav Shmuel Nadel Shlita of Bnei Brak. The levaya took place on Monday afternoon in Yarkon Beis HaChayim.

http://www.stam.net has some excellent education articles and information.

With regards to safety, I’ve read that he followed safety precautions and that there was nothing he could have done. With this type of work a professional mask is needed as well as a proper exhaught system.
