El Al To Amend Luggage Regulations Beginning In Nov. 2011


El Al has sent out a notice to frequent flyers, members of the Matmid Club, explaining that as of November 1, 2011, it is “updating its policy regarding baggage stores in the aircraft hold”. Following is the El Al notification. One should read it carefully as the regulations differ on flights to and from North America and other destinations.

“Matmid Silver members will enjoy an additional 5 kilos (11lbs) of weight at no charge, in all Classes and to all destinations, except North America (TL status members will no longer enjoy an additional 5 kilos at no charge).

Matmid Gold, Platinum and Top Platinum members will enjoy an additional 10 kilos (22lbs) of weight at no charge, in all Classes and to all destinations, except North America.

On EL AL flights to and from North America, in Economy Class, Matmid Gold, Platinum and top members may store 2 pieces of baggage weighing 32 kilos (70lbs) each, at no charge.

The following table lists EL AL passengers’ entitlement to baggage stored in the aircraft hold at no cost, according to destination and Class:

EUROPE

Economy Class – 1 piece (23kg) for general public and Matmid TL

Silver SL – 1 piece (28kg/61.5lbs)

Gold GL/Platinum Top – 1 piece (32kg/ 70lbs)
Business Class – 1 piece (32kg) for general public and Matmid TL

Silver SL – Up to two pieces – total of 37kg/81.4lbs

Gold GL/Platinum Top – Up to two pieces – total of 42kg/92.4lbs

 

First Class – Up to two pieces – 32kg each for general public and Matmid TL

Silver SL – Up to three pieces – total of 69kg/151.8lbs

Gold GL/Platinum Top – Up to three pieces – total of 74kg/162.8lbs
SOUTH AFRICA

Economy Class – 1 piece (23kg) for general public and Matmid TL

Silver SL – 1 piece (28kg/61.5lbs)

Gold GL/Platinum Top – 1 piece (32kg/ 70lbs)
Business Class – 1 piece (32kg) for general public and Matmid TL

Silver SL – Up to two pieces – total of 37kg/81.4lbs

First Class – Up to four pieces – 32kg each for general public, Matmid TL, Silver SL, Gold GL & Platinum Top

The benefits do not include code share flights and continuation destinations.
No piece of baggage should exceed 32 kilos.
The change will apply to tickets that are ticketed as of November 1, 2011.
The old regulations will apply to tickets that are ticketed until October 31, 2011.

  1. What I don’t see anywhere in the article is HOW MUCH that 2nd piece of luggage (that we are all used to being able to bring at no charge) will cost???

    The answer?
    Hope you are all sitting down…
    According to what I was told, that extra bag will not be $45, will not be $65, it WILL be an UNbeeeeelieveably crazy TWO HUNDRED FORTY DOLLARS!!!
    That means a couple making a trip to Israel can plan to add almost another THOUSAND DOLLARS to their airfare!!!

  2. i think e one is missing the point. A regular person in coach can now only check in ONE suitcase weighing 50lbs for free. I think they’ve made a huge mistake. They could have cornered the market but just allowing the two bags they normally do, and up that to 70lbs and youll have every Jew on the planet flying el al.!!
