Kiryas Joel: Aide to House Minority Whip Denies Speaker Push at Hasid Meeting

Maggie Haberman of Politico reports:

A spokesman for House Minority Whip Eric Cantor is denying a report that he told Hasidic leaders in Kiryas Joel that he would himself be a Speaker candidate if the Republicans capture the majority on Tuesday and there isn’t enough support coalescing around Minority Leader John Boehner.

Cantor supposedly made the comment in a meeting Friday while he was pushing the case for Nan Hayworth, the Republican running neck-and-neck with Democratic Rep. John Hall in NY-19. Cantor was in New York backing Hayworth and GOPer Fran Becker in NY-4.

I asked Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring about it, and he replied that the claim “is beyond inaccurate.”

“Mr. Cantor visited Kiryas Joel to stand with Nan Hayworth and make the case for the endorsement of her candidacy for the Congressional Seat in the 19th District,” he added. “During the meeting, he was extremely clear that should Republicans win back the House, he would support John Boehner for Speaker.”

Such a statement from Cantor would have been a huge deal that would have impacted the national GOP on the eve of a major, likely history-making election on Tuesday.
