Strasbourg – Forty-nine tombstones were desecrated in the Jewish cemetery of Bar-le-Duc in northeastern France, police announced on Sunday.
No claim nor inscription was found in the cemetery where police said that a total of 49 headstones out of 126 were knocked over or damaged, public prosecutor Yves Badorc said.
Police were alerted Friday evening by a pedestrain who noticed that the gate to the cemetery was open, when it normally remained shut, the daily newspaper L’Est Republicain reported.
The National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism (BNVCA) called on the prosecutor “to take into consideration the racist character of the degradations in this old Jewish cemetery, which constitute an anti-Semitic act despite the absence of any inscription”.
