From Chicago To Israel – Another Incredible Chesed By Hatzolah Air

A little over a week ago, a complex plan was undertaken to bring a woman home to Israel after a severe asthma attack in Chicago that left her in a critical state. The complex plan involved multiple airplane flights and ground transfer that the woman received for free enabling her to fly to Israel.

The woman called Chicago Hatzalah for help during her asthma attack and collapsed after the EMTs arrived. She lost consciousness and was saved by the Chicago Hatzalah first responders, but her situation rapidly deteriorated and she was placed on life-saving machines.

Since the woman is an Israeli citizen, her family requested that she be transported to Israel for medical care. Having spent what little savings they had on arranging for care in Chicago, the family was left with no financial means whatsoever to arrange for transportation to Israel. Chicago Hatzalah turned to Hatzalah Air for assistance.

Without hesitation, Hatzolah Air’s talented flight coordination team together with its Medical Director Dr. Avishai Neuman, sent a Hatzolah Air jet to Chicago’s Midway Airport where it met Chicago Hatzolah to start the nearly 24 hour complex transfer to Shaarei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, all free of charge.

The woman was accompanied on the flights by Flight Medic David Sofer and a Physician who had been monitoring the woman in Chicago.

Kanfei Chayim, a beautiful organization that arranges free commercial tickets with miles for patients in need, donated the commercial tickets for the second leg to Israel where she was treated with oxygen and other necessary medical provisions throughout the flight.

Upon landing, the woman and the flight crew were met by a ground ambulance and transferred to Shaare Zedek hospital where family members had endless praise for all the Hatzalah Air, Kanfei Chayim and the ground volunteers in Chicago, NY and Israel for their incredible selfless service.

“The woman was in a critical state,” said Dr. Neuman. “There wasn’t much we could do to improve her situation but we still offered her the best service we could. It’s what Hatzolah Air does.”

“Pulling together an elaborate plan for the safe transport of one elderly woman is typical behavior for our organizations” said Mayer Mendlowitz from Kanfei Chayim, whose mission aligns with Hatzolah Air in quietly stopping at nothing to get patients the best care possible.

  1. This story is much better than the first one, but it still fails to mention the superhuman efforts of Rabbi Sruli Matzliach of Refuah 311, who put the whole amazing and unbelievable operation together. After personally saving the patient’s life with Chicago Hatzala, Rabbi Matzliach (along with Dr. Reuven Warshell) repeatedly intervened to make sure that the patient received the best hospital care possible, while he simultaneously worked tirelessly on the diplomatic front to ensure that all of the necessary paperwork was arranged to allow the patient to be transferred to Israel–a gargantuan undertaking, and then orchestrated the logistics for her return to Israel, facilitated by Hatzala Air and Kanfei Chayim.
