GRIM NUMBERS CLIMB: At Least 159 People Are Now Unaccounted For In Condo Collapse

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava says there are now 159 people unaccounted for after the partial building collapse in Surfside, Florida. This has increased from at least 99 people.

The number of accounted people has also gone up to 120.

“Unfortunately, this has been a tragic night. We do have 120 people now accounted for, which is very, very good news. But our unaccounted for number has gone up to 159. In addition, we can tragically report the death count is now four,” she said Friday.

“I want to be very clear about the numbers. They are very fluid. We’ll continue to update you as we have them … The search and rescue team worked throughout the night, and it was a very active scene,” she said.

With scores of firefighters working overnight to reach any possible survivors both from under and atop the remains of the building, hopes rested on how quickly crews using dogs and microphones to sift through the wreckage could complete their grim, yet delicate task.

“Every time we hear a sound, we concentrate on those areas,” said Assistant Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raide Jadallah.

Three more bodies were removed overnight, and Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez said authorities were working with the medical examiner’s office to identify the victims. Eleven injuries were reported, with four people treated at hospitals.

Officials said no cause for the collapse has been determined.

Video of the collapse showed the center of the building appearing to tumble down first and a section nearest to the ocean teetering and coming down seconds later, as a huge dust cloud swallowed the neighborhood.

About half the building’s roughly 130 units were affected, and rescuers pulled at least 35 people from the wreckage in the first hours after the collapse. But with 159 still unaccounted for, work could go on for days.

Television video early Friday showed crews still fighting flareups of fires on the rubble piles. Intermittent rain over South Florida is also hampering the search.

  1. Why are there so few rescue teams on site? Only 10-12 firemen working at a time while millions are watching from afar and Biden promising aid. Why can’t they get more rescue teams from across the nation to help out with the search like they do in third world countries after earthquakes??

  2. Let me remind everyone how on 9/11 the initial #’s of those missing @WTC was initially about double of what the final figures ended being, because some people were counted twice, and other were not even there, and various people if they merited to escape, simply fled as quickly & as far away as possible, without firstly registering their escape.
This aspect is likely to play out in exact same manner on this condo as it did on WTC.
