Statement by Council Member Simcha Felder Regarding Importance Of Property Tax Relief

PDY_19702.jpgThe $400 homeowner rebate and 7% property tax rate cut implemented last year was an important way to provide much needed property tax relief to homeowners. Not continuing that effort would be a mistake.

Mayor Bloomberg deserves praise for providing prudent property tax relief when the City was experiencing budget surpluses. While the Independent Budget Office is projecting possible upcoming budget deficits, we must keep in mind that at this point, they are projections. The same economic issues that are contributing to these projections are also hurting city taxpayers, who face fears of a recession and a cost of living that is continuously increasing, not to mention rising property tax assessments and mortgage payments. New Yorkers have shown that they are willing to make tremendous sacrifices during a fiscal crisis. Until then, we must continue to provide the property tax relief that New Yorkers need and deserve.

  1. facts are, he did raise property taxes by 18.5%, which, arguably necessary, is a huge hike, thousands of dollars more annually for homeowners. (and he wanted 25%). and now, not only is the 7% cut almost definitely
being rolled back, he is considering an additional increase. I don’t see much to praise about that.

  2. what hypocrocy, Simcha Felder right after he was elected voted for the highest property tax increase in nyc history a 19 percent increase.something which really hurt the frum community.
Rather than stand up to the democratic caucus he was scared to get penalized resulting in his support for the increase.
did he issue a statement then??
