The president of Toronto’s police union says an officer’s behavior in arresting a suspect in Monday’s deadly van attack was “one shining moment” in an otherwise horrific day.
Mike McCormack of the Toronto Police Association said Tuesday “We’re extremely proud of him,” and adds, “He may have prevented additional deaths.”
Videos circulating on social media show the officer confronting the suspect even as he points a dark object toward the officer.
The officer refuses to shoot and repeatedly yells for the man to get down.
The suspect warns he has a gun in his pocket.
And he can be heard saying: “Shoot me in the head.”
From a high-rise window, another video appears to show the suspect walking backward with his arms raised as the officer moves toward him.
The suspect eventually goes to the ground and street-level footage shows the officer kneeling over him as he lies on the pavement.

Idiots. He could have been killed and then the shooter would continue killing. He was probably afraid of the crazies protesting. What a shining moment.
Stupid cop. He could’ve gotten killed. Nothing to praise for putting your own life on the line to preserve that of a murderer. Liberalism at its worst.
If only the NYPD would adopt such a policy when dealing with unarmed mentally challenged people.
Wow, how easy and quick you people are to criticize and condemn. This cop did his job in a most courageous and humane way, preventing a death and arresting a murderer with boldness and guts. This guy is but a brave hero. Say what you want, this story is a refreshing and awesome piece among all the rest of the depressing, frivolous, and tragic news that we keep getting in today’s news
For those that think it is critical and condemning to disagree with the actions of the cop, I think of it this way— If there was even a 1% chance that the suspect has an ability to kill one more person or officer, then it is 100% worth the risk to end his life. Here’s the thing, when dealing with the uncertainties of the quick moment, we don’t know if he has a weapon or another plan of attack. The uncooperative suspect continued to say he has a gun in his pocket. If an innocent bystander or officer was killed after that moment, then it becomes a life-long mistake and mishap of not killing the suspect. The main initial goal should be to protect the general population, not a suspect.
