UPDATED: Suspect Identified, Arrested In Vicious Crown Heights Attack Last Shabbos

(L-R) Surveillance footage shows the suspect in a vicious Crown Heights assault this past Shabbos, the victim

An arrest has just been made in the vicious assault against an Orthodox Jewish man in Crown Heights last Shabbos.

Sources confirm to YWN that the Hate Crimes Task Force took a man into custody early Friday morning, and Detectives believe that have the right man. He is being questioned at this time.

40-year-old James Vincet of East 160 Street in the Bronx has been charged with assault, strangulation and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Additional information was expected to be forthcoming from the NYPD later Friday.

As YWN had reported, a 50-year-old man was injured in an unprovoked, vicious attack as he was walking home from Davening on Shabbos. A reward of $50,000 for information leading to the apprehension of the suspect had been offered by a noted philanthropist from Los Angeles.

The attack occurred on Saturday, April 21, at around 1:30 p.m. on Rutland Road near Schenectady Avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The victim, a resident of the community for three years, was taken to Kingsbrook Jewish Hospital after suffering a cracked rib along with bruising and scratches across his body.

The victim said he only said good afternoon to the man who then told him, “You fake Jews, who are you saying hello to? You’re fake Jews and you stole all my money and robbed me and stole my mortgage and my house. I want to kill you!” After being chased and caught, the victim was put in a choke hold and began to pass out when the attack was broken up by two passersby.

This is the second week in a row that a hate crime occurred in Crown Heights. Last weekend, a 42-year-old Jewish man visiting Crown Heights was attacked on Eastern Parkway.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, last year there were 11 anti-Semitic assaults in New York state. Seven of them were in Brooklyn.

Leaders of New York’s Jewish Leadership Council have written to the NYPD, questioning the timing of the attacks. Both happened on the Shabbos afternoon – when there are fewer Jewish volunteer safety officers on patrol.

  1. The animal told the victim he was going to murder him right there, all for him being a Jew, and the charge is for assault??????

  2. A murder was stopped only after passerby intervened, this animal needs to be put away for a long time, so noone can “steal his mortgage”. Filthy animal, gotta wonder where fat Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are?
