US Charges Detroit-Area Man With Aiding ISIS

A Detroit-area man has been charged with providing support to the Islamic State group, which the U.S. government has designated as terrorists.

The Justice Department says 28-year-old Ibraheem Musaibli was captured overseas by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces while IS was fighting in Iraq and Syria. He’s accused of working for the group for three years until June.

Assistant Attorney General John Demers says Musaibli “may have endangered the lives of countless innocent people.”

Musaibli has been turned over to the United States and will appear Wednesday in Detroit federal court. His brother says he’ll ask for a court-appointed lawyer.

Musaibli was raised in Dearborn. His father, Izzy Musaibli, tells The Detroit News that his son isn’t an IS fighter and only was doing “small work” for food.
