VIDEO/PHOTOS: Porch With Sukkah Packed With People Collapses in Monsey; No Serious Injuries Reported

A porch with a Sukkah on it collapsed in Monsey on Wednesday night, but miraculously no serious injuries were reported.

Monsey Hatzolah received multiple calls reporting the porch collapse at around 10:00PM on Sam Law Drive. Hatzolah responded with at least 7 ambulances.

Sources tell YWN that there may have been as many as 100 people in the Sukkah, as there was a Simcha taking place there.

B”H no serious injuries were reported. Hatzolah was testing 12 people with various injuries. All are in stable condition.

  1. This is the succos version of the unlicensed matzoh bakeries at pesach catching fire and causing damage. B’H, there are generally few serious injuries in these events but not in all cases. Hard to understand what some yidden are hiding in the space between their ears. Seems like a no brainer that you don’t pack 100 of your closest friends into a succah on your home porch.

  2. I don’t knew who YWN sources were but the FACT is that there were only 22 people on the porch. The porches for these houses are usually approximately 12×12 so even if they were packed as sardines it’s questionable if would 100 people would be able to fit on such a porch. And likely there was a table and chairs in the sukah so 100 people could not have physically fit on in any case.

These porches are made of wood and look solid, but between the age of these porches and the way they were built, even 22 people are a lot and they are known to collapse easily even with only a small group of people on it.

  3. Great video, very informative.

Good point. But at least there were some emergency vehicles with flashing lights. No fire trucks, though.

  4. Reb Philosopher offers some excellent analysis taking the dimensions of the porch as well as the age and material of the porch into account. One big factor that he failed to take into account is the obesity of the average yid attending this alleged simcha in the sukkah.

  5. @Gadolhadorah
    How judgmental, accusing and wrong.
The Sukkah was built on a newish porch, that was built “according to code”, with strong supports, Ledger properly secured with nuts and bolts to strong structure that was not rotting.
That’s according to a licensed home inspector on scene, (as you’ll probably not take my word for it).
Anyone who saw the porch, or has just a litttle seichel knows that the number 100 is a gross exaggeration.
Mistakes happen, tragedies happen, it was a unfortunate incident.
But where has הוי דן את כל האדם לכף זכות gone? And especially when it comes to our own.
Don’t you want to be judged favorably??

  6. To philosopher:
Your first sentence contains the word FACT and then you use words such as “usually and approximately” regarding size etc.
Most legal porches there, are not 12×12.
Also u forgot to take into consideration the dancing and the shlock which adds to the mathematical equation.

Bottom line. Somebody or bodies were simply not using what is hidden under thier hats.

  7. Takes2-2tango, please reread what I wrote. It is very obvious that the word “FACT” pertains to the number of people on the porch at the time of it’s collapse and is not in reference to the approximate size of the porch.
