WATCH: Curious Toddler Swept Away On Luggage Conveyor Belt At Atlanta Airport

Surveillance cameras at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport caught the journey of a curious toddler who climbed onto a baggage conveyor belt and took a trip through the baggage system. The incident, which took place on Monday, saw a boy sneak past a ticket counter and climb onto a conveyor belt.

The boy, aged 2, walked away from his mother while she attempted to print out her boarding pass at a kiosk. The Atlanta police reported that the mother had told officers at the airport that she had looked away from her son “for one second” and he disappeared.

The mother also reported the situation to an airline employee who later told the police that the mother believed that her son jumped on the bag conveyor belt. The employee said that he checked but could not see or hear a child on the belt. He also told police that he did not see the boy go behind the ticket counter or climb on the belt.

Security camera footage from the incident later showed the boy walking through an unattended ticket counter and stand directly in front of a moving conveyor belt. The footage shows the boy climbing on to the belt and momentarily getting stuck before a black and yellow bag pushes him through to the other side of the wall.

Moments after the boy went through the wall a woman ran up to the counter and a Spirit Airline employee hit the stop button on the belt.

But the boy had already disappeared further into the system where other cameras picked up his until the boy reached a Transportation Security Administration baggage area where TSA officials immediately noticed him come through on the belt and picked him up off the belt and brought him back to safety.

Emergency medical services treated the boy for what they called a “severely swollen and bruised right hand” before he was transported to a hospital.

In a statement issued by Spirit Airlines on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the airline said:  “We are aware of an incident in which an unattended child passed by a section of our ticket counter that was not staffed or open at the time.”

“We are currently working with TSA and airport officials to ensure all protocol was followed. We wish the child the best in their recovery,” the airline said.
