  1. Eli was a real Chasuv’eh baal habus. Every afternoon no matter how busy the office was, he would walk out to go learn with his chavrusah.

  2. Oy Vey !!
    Hashem Yerachem.
R’ Eli was a gem of a person. Eidel, kind, polite, caring and soft spoken. This was all while doing his regular business.
    HAMAKOM YENACHEM……….

  3. Mr. Soffer will always be remembered by the Talmidim of Long Beach as a true Ohaiv Torah & a wonderful person. BD”E. Yehi Zichro Boruch.

  4. I’ve known him for years. His son, Daniel, is a good friend. He was a conderful man. A mekabel kol adam b’seiver panim yafos. He leaves behind a widow and over ten children. More importantly, he leaves behind a legacy of commitment to Judaism, Jewish values, adnd Torah learning. Yehei zichro baruch.

  5. As a Bochur in the Mesivta of Long Beach over 15 years ago, I vividly remember him as a generous, warmhearted Baal Habo’os who loved the bochrim. He always donated food to the Yeshiva and made time to schmooze with the boys. Baruch Dayan Ha’emes

  6. A true gem of a yid who really did care about the bochrim of the Yeshiva.(in fact in my days at the Mesivta, he was 1 of the few balei battim in town to have any real connection to the yeshiva-and the bochrim realised this was a special person)

  7. THE BURIAL WILL TAKE PLACE IN ISRAEL SO MOST FAMILY MEMBERS WILL NOT BE RETURNING UNTIL MONDAY MORNING. AT THAT TIME THE SHIVA WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE SOFFER HOME 151 E. OLIVE STREET LONG BEACH 516-432-2208.

  8. I knew Eliyahu Sofer for over 20 years. His death is a loss for the entire world. The man’s kindness knew no bounds. If the entire Jewish community would act like him, our problems would be gone forever. I only wish more people could have learned proper human behavior from this gentle, loving kind man.

  9. As someone who learnt in the Mesivta of Long Beach many years ago, I remember R’ Eliyahu ztz”l( or as he was fondly referred to as “Mr. Sofer”)as someone who loved bnei Torah in general, but had a special affection for the bachurim of the Mesivta in paricular. Indeed, he was a very soft spoken and warm person who greeted all with a smile. He was loved and revered by all in the community; but truth be said, he was koveia his makom in the Mesivta’s beis hamidrash, in a yeshiva atmosphere. This defined his very essence. He may have worked and even owned a successful company but in the final analysis he was someone who never left the shiarim hamitzuyanim baHalacha and as I write I see in my mind his large wooden orange shtender situated in the rear of the old beis midrash, his contagious smile and warm greetings of “gut Shabbos” as one passed him standing in line to wish the Rabbeim a “gut Shabbos”. As noted above, most of the community ,with a few exceptions, didn’t even have a connection with the Mesivta; yet, Mr. Sofer didn’t only have a connection, he enjoyed a special “relationship” with the Mesivta and its bachurim who loved him so much and will sorely miss him.
The Olam HaTorah has lost a very dear friend. May he continue to advocate on our behalf in the Olam HaEmes and may the Eibishter comfort his bereaved family, which includes all of us in the yeshiva world, and send us “Eliyahu” Mivaser Tov, Now!
If anyone knows any details about the kevurah in Eretz Yisroel, please post it.
