Attorney General William Barr drew sharp condemnation Thursday for comparing lockdown orders during the coronavirus pandemic to slavery.

In remarks Wednesday night at Hillsdale College in Michigan, Barr had called the lockdown orders the “greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history” since slavery.

Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the No. 3 House Democratic leader, told CNN that Barr’s remarks were “the most ridiculous, tone-deaf, God-awful things I’ve ever heard” because they wrongly equated human bondage with a measure aimed at saving lives.

“Slavery was not about saving lives. It was about devaluing lives,” Clyburn said. “This pandemic is a threat to human life.”

This is not the first occasion that Barr has condemned stay-at-home orders.

He has previously said that some orders were “ disturbingly close to house arrest,” and the Justice Department sent letters to several states warning that some of their virus-related restrictions might be unlawful. Prosecutors also filed statements of interest in several civil cases challenging some of the restrictions.

  1. clyburn ? is he aware of the anarchy that’s happening in the country ? never heard him condemn anything they have done. did he sleep through everything. oh!! he’s a dummoc- rat. Right on AG Barr.keep saying that what needs to be said.

  2. The Democrats at the time of slavery made the same argument then that they are making now about the lockkdown – that it was for the slave’s own good and they were doing the slaves a favour and taking care of them.

  3. rt is a liar. What do you call what’s happening in Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, etc, if not anarchy? Especially in Portland. You have literal self-declared anarchists running wild, assaulting people and destroying property, and the police are under orders not to stop them, and to arrest anyone who tries to defend himself from them.

  4. rt: Yes. I can. And having seen the anarchy, the calls for violence, Marxist revolution, cop killing, exhortations to burn and loot private property, the cheerleading of the media, the collusion of certain elected officials I looked at the political situation, media reporting and what has been passing for academics in the United States with fresh eyes and Woke up to the fact that I had to walk away from the Democrat party. The side that chooses anti-Semitism has been on the wrong side of history since forever.
