NO RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH: Dem Lawmakers Want Twitter To Suspend Trump Account

Democratic lawmakers are urging Twitter to suspend President Trump’s account, suggesting none of his tweets should be posted until all ballots have been counted in the 2020 presidential election.

The president, whose Twitter comments Wednesday complained about Democratic challenger Joe Biden’s lead among mail-in ballots and claimed victory for himself in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina before counting was finished, has been spreading “pure disinformation,” Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly said on the social media platform.

“Suspend his account, @Twitter,” Connolly wrote. “Valid votes are being counted. This is America, not Russia.”

Rhode Island’s Rep. David Cicilline said Trump’s Wednesday tweets were “a threat to our democracy.”

In a nutshell, you can deny the holocaust and call for the murder of Jews on Twitter, but President Trump must be silenced.

  1. Twitter is a private company, and “Free speech” (as in the First amendment”) only applies to the government. As a private company, Twitter is has its own “free speech” right to ban anyone with whom they disagree with. Anyone else can establish a rival private platform, to publicize the speech they like.

  2. Ther’s a mistake in your headline

You mean right to free speech.

Twitter has a right to “say” what it wants, and shouldnt be forced to “speak” Trump’s lies.

Don’t forget corporations are people too

  3. The YWN headline is utterly misleading. Trump can tell any lie he wants to, but Twitter is, by law, a “publisher,” and therefore is legally responsible for harm caused by anyone’s Tweet, including a president’s Tweet. As a legal publisher, Twitter is required by law to censor falsehoods.

I personally am troubled by the idea that Twitter and other social media platforms are responsible for, and have the power to, censor the postings on their sites. I don’t know the solution, but there is more false information than ever circulating throughout the world. Social media are just a few years old, compared to printing, mail, telegrams, radio and TV. We will eventually learn how (if at all) to regulate social media and enable everyone to know truth from falsehood.

  4. Those of you who say Twitter is a private company and can do what they want….you are wrong. Twitter (and Facebook, etc.) has federal protections that protect it from lawsuits. Therefore people have every right to complain about being censored.

  5. So the nameless owner of THIS website also has a duty to post EVERY comment that ANY person posts without censorship or limitation? Really?

  6. akuperma,

You know that’s not true. Twitter and FakeBook both have exemptions protecting them from monopoly. And what about the section 230?

  7. huju: Twitter has no liability for disseminating even outright lies since the Congress in its infinite wisdom exempted social media for liability, either under state or federal law, from content posted, but without requiring social media to post whatever users want. So if Twitter wants to spread left-wing propaganda (e.g. Trump is a racist anti-semitic monster spawned by the devil), they are allowed to do so. If someone lies about you on Twitter, you can sue the poster for libel but you can’t sue Twitter. Whether the law should be changed to make social media into “publishers”, or alternatively, into “common carriers”, is a current “hot topic” in Congress.

  8. There is no “right to free speech” on private internet sites. Just as YeshivaWorldNews can and does censor posts, so can Twitter.

You don’t like that, you can start a competing site.
