Telehealth Has Come To The Dental Market | How This Will Affect Dentistry Costs

Telehealth, the provision of clinical healthcare via remote communication methods, including teleorthodontics, has increased significantly since 2019. Direct to consumer (DTC) orthodontics, including at home aligners, are a type of teleorthodontics. While clinical assessments are required, these can take place remotely. Patients are able to take impressions of their teeth at home and send that along with pictures to an orthodontist who can then prepare a treatment plan remotely. These types of treatments have had a positive impact on the convenience and cost effectiveness of dental treatment.

Traditional Orthodontic Treatments

Traditional hands on orthodontic treatments such as braces and Invisalign have started to lose out in the consumer market due to increased availability of at home aligners. However, Invisalign remains popular for consumers who prefer a more personal approach, as they provide the teeth straightening benefits of braces without the noticeable visibility. The main downside is that the cost of Invisalign braces is generally between $3 000 and $8 000.

Part of the expense involved in Invisalign is the frequent trips to the orthodontist. Some orthodontists have started using remote treatment plans for patients using Invisalign. However, Invisalign is not always conducive to teleorthodontics as most dentist offices are not adequately set up for remote treatment. This, as well as the fact that the attachments used in Invisalign treatment require adjustment mean regular office visits are still required. The more visits and adjustments required, the higher the cost.

At Home Products and Treatment

At home aligners can cost a fraction of Invisalign braces. Home aligners like SmileDirectClub, Byte and Candid typically cost between $1,800 and $2,400. Teleorthodontics can also reduce costs associated with visiting the dentist such as travel costs, and can be a huge benefit for patients in rural areas without convenient access to an orthodontist. While in person assessment for at home aligners are required, remote monitoring can reduce the number of necessary visits to the orthodontist.

Teleorthodontics and at home aligners do have their downsides. The reduced number of in person visits can limit orthodontists’  ability to assess patient progress. It may also be harder to enforce positive patient behaviour, such as good oral hygiene from a distance, which can be exacerbated by certain habits such as smoking or the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients should be made fully aware of the potential risks and complications during the initial assessment and should be encouraged to follow rules and guidelines related to at home aligners strictly. If patients are made aware of the risks, follow rules strictly, and have meaningful remote follow ups, the results can be excellent.

SmileDirectClub Reviews are worth considering: One user rated the product with five stars and goes on to say: “Is it hard to wear them all the time, yes. Is it risky, yes. But, if you are like me and you think that you could benefit from some minor corrections, then go for it!”

A user of Byte touted the amazing service she received saying: “This company was always at the top and when I called to inquire they were amazingly friendly and helpful. They’ve been able to answer my questions and provide amazing customer service.”

Another patient who chose Candid  stated that: “All steps went painlessly and my teeth moved! I now only wear the retainer at night and couldn’t be happier with my smile. Candid Co was always professional, easy to contact, and overall great to work with. I am beyond impressed by them!”

Therefore it is clear that at home aligners can have great results and teleorthodontics can be an effective form of treatment.

How to Choose The best Orthodontic Product

While Invisalign may be expensive, it is possible to reduce treatment costs. For example, while consumers tend to prefer more experienced orthodontists who seem to charge higher fees, Invisalign offers discount percentages according to the status of the orthodontist. The higher the rating, the higher the discount. Expensive service providers can sometimes pass the reduced cost enabled by the discount on to consumers. The orthodontist’s location could also reduce costs depending on how far it is from your home and whether it is located in an expensive area.

Depending on the severity of the dental conditions in question, in person treatment may be preferable. Furthermore, a lack of access to or familiarity with technology may reduce the efficacy of teleorthodontics for some consumers. However, a condition that is relatively minor can be treated with the more convenient and affordable at home aligners.

Final Thoughts

The increased use of telehealth in the dental industry as well as increased use of at home aligners by patients, has resulted in overall reduced dentistry costs. However, there will always be some costs involved in orthodontic treatment. Financing is available through certain dentists and third party providers. Certain insurance plans also cover orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign and at home aligners.
