The Justice Department has asked a court to unseal the warrant the FBI received before searching the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday, acknowledging the extraordinary public interest in the case.
The request was striking because such documents traditionally remain sealed during a pending investigation. But the Justice Department appeared to recognize that its silence since the search had created a vacuum for bitter attacks from the former president and his allies, and Garland felt it wise to respond to the widespread demands for details about what the led to the FBI action.
“The public’s clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred under these circumstances weighs heavily in favor of unsealing,” said a motion filed in federal court in Florida on Thursday seeking the the unsealing.
Garland also cited the fact that Trump himself had provided the first public confirmation of the FBI search, and the attorney general said that disclosing information about it now would not harm the court’s functions.
Garland also said he personally approved the search warrant, which was part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into the discovery of classified White House records recovered from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, earlier this year.
It was not immediately clear when — or if — the unsealing request might be granted or when the documents could be released. Trump will also have a chance to object.
The attorney general condemned verbal attacks on FBI and Justice Department personnel over the search.
“I will not stand by silently when their integrity is unfairly attacked,” he said, calling them “dedicated, patriotic public servants.”

He should have asked for an injunction, and filed a discovery request for the documents in question. It is highly unethical to use the police (the FBI no less) to seize property whose ownership is being disputed in what would normally being a civil proceeding. As Garland is not some kid fresh out of law school, this suggests a less than honorable motive

He is a 100% political operative who is likely to be personally investigated when the new Congress convenes.
Although he claims that “All Americans are entitled to the even-handed application of the law to due process of the law and to the presumption of innocence,” the “All Americans” means everyone except Donald Trump. Trump has been cooperating – So there was no need for a full-blown raid EXCEPT in the eyes of the far Left. Despite the long investigation, why has the DOJ been completely silent about Hunter Biden? Why the slow-walk at charging him? It is already been publicly confirmed that the emails on his laptop were authentic. Are they afraid that any further investigation will lead to “the big guy”?

Trump has not complied with 2 subpoenas for the documents so nobody can say he was cooperating.
The FBI action was not even handed as the agents waited until 9am to present the warrant and were dressed in business suits not FBI jackets. If serving such a warrant on me they would have come fully armed with FBI jackets, heavily armed at 6am. I have witnessed such actions. This was not a “full blown raid”
Why do Trump’s people always bring up Hunter Biden and Hillary Clinton when ever Trump faces accusations? The DOJ and IRS are investigating Hunter Biden.
Trump has without question seen the warrant and inventory list of items seized unless his lawyer was negligent in providing same. Trump has not released the documents to the media (even Fox, OANN or Newsmax) because the warrant and inventory disprove his narrative.
The wild accusations left Garland no choice but to make the unusual request the court to allow release of the documents. Garland is thorough an works quietly and independently in the pursuit of justice as we have seen in his previous investigations. I have the utmost respect for my fellow Litvak.

While I don’t agree with Garland’s politics, throughout his career as a prosecutor and Federal Judge he earned a well deserved reputation for integrity. Unfortunately, he has jeopardized that reputation ever since he assumed his current position. How soon many people forgot his attempt to suppress parents who were questioning the decisions of their local school boards. And now this decision to approve a request for a search warrant and forceful break in to a home of a former president. No surprise that after initially saying nothing he is now asking for the information to be unsealed. He needs to get in front of this story while the Democrats still control the House and the sympathetic media can spin the story in his favor. He needs to convince people in the center – regardless of their party affiliation- that he did not do this for political reasons. Otherwise the reputation he took some 45 years to build will be lost forever.
Volvib, can you or anyone else provide instances of where the DOJ suppressed parents at local school boards? The DOJ only issued an alert after school board members were harassed, threatened and intimidated buy people attending meetings and complaining about school books and the fictional teaching of CRT in schools.
Is anyone able to provide the name and location of any school were CRT is taught other than law schools? Unfortunately at lot of people have been riled up by TV personalities seeking ratings and politicians seeking votes and contributions. Their claims are not always truthful.

Garland wrote his memo and directed the FBI to get involved with what were clearly local issues relating to various individual school boards one week after the National School Board Association wrote to the White House regarding so called threats to the safety of their members. Now I think we can all agree that the NSBA like the two national teachers unions are pro Democratic. It should be clear to all fair minded people that Garland’s memo and instructions to the FBI were politically motivated- which is why after being roundly criticized they were never actually acted upon.
Your comment regarding CRT is a red herring. Bottom line here is that public school education particularly when it comes to American history has become woke and politically correct and parents have the right to know what their children are being taught and the right to object to one sided presentations.
