President Donald Trump disclosed that a mysterious “present” from Iran—teased earlier this week during negotiations—was the passage of multiple oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy routes.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the gesture involved “10 boats of oil” that were allowed to transit the vital waterway, signaling what he described as a serious diplomatic overture from Iranian officials.
Earlier in the week, Trump had hinted at a significant goodwill move without revealing details.
“It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money, and I’m not going to tell you what the present is, but it was a very significant prize,” Trump said during remarks in the Oval Office.
On Thursday, he elaborated, saying the U.S. had engaged in “very substantial talks” with Iranian representatives. According to Trump, Iran initially agreed to allow eight large oil tankers to pass through the strait.
“They said, ‘To show you the fact that we’re real and solid and we’re there, we’re going to let you have eight boats of oil, eight boats, eight big boats of oil,’” Trump said, noting that the vessels sailed under Pakistani flags.
He added that two additional tankers were later sent “to apologize for something they said.”
Trump said the move demonstrated to U.S. officials that “we’re dealing with the right people.”
When asked whether Iran should be permitted to charge tolls for ships crossing the strait, Trump responded, “They shouldn’t be able to, but they’re doing it a little bit.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of global concern, with any disruption threatening major portions of the world’s oil supply.
