New York City saw a sharp increase in antisemitic hate crimes last month, with Jews targeted in 41 confirmed incidents during May, according to NYPD statistics.
The figure represents nearly 60% of all hate crimes reported citywide during the month, despite Jews comprising only about 10% of the city’s population. The total works out to more than one antisemitic incident every day.
The May numbers were significantly higher than recent months, when the NYPD recorded 30 antisemitic hate crimes in April, 32 in March, and 21 in February.
No other group came close to the number of incidents targeting Jews. During May, police recorded five hate crimes targeting Muslims, five based on sexual orientation, three targeting Asians, and a handful of others involving different ethnic, racial, and religious groups.
Since the beginning of 2026, the NYPD has documented 152 confirmed antisemitic hate crimes, accounting for 57% of all hate crimes reported in the city.
The department notes that its reporting system now focuses on confirmed hate crimes, and many experts believe the true number of incidents may be considerably higher due to underreporting.
