Kiryas Yoel & Lakewood Show Interesting Figures in New Census Figures

kirj.jpgTuesday’s NY Times has a story about the striking trends revealed in new census figures – that produce the most detailed snapshot of New York City neighborhoods and of the metropolitan area’s smaller cities and towns since the 2000 census.

YWN found the following two items mentioned to be quite interesting:

“Underscoring the growing diversity of the suburbs, the survey found that the median age in Kiryas Joel in Orange County is just over 14 — making it the youngest community in the country with 20,000 or more people. The town’s youthfulness reflects the high birth rates of its Hasidic community.

Lakewood, N.J., an Orthodox Jewish enclave and home to one of the nation’s largest yeshivas, was in second place, with a median age of 20.”

  1. THIS PROVES WHAT I SUSPECTED, THAT LITVAKS GET MARRIED MUCH LATER THAN hASSIDIM–SIX YEARS LATER.

HERE IS SOLID EVIDENCE OF WHY WE HAVE A “SHIDDUCH CRISIS.”

  2. mazel tov! mazel tov! simchos in klal yisroel!
BTW, deepthinker, I don’t think the report means Chassidim get married at age 14. But maybe you were just joking.

  3. #2, you’re completely wrong (even though you may be right about chassidim getting married at a younger age than litvaks).

The reason why you’re wrong: Kiryas Yoel consists of chareidim only, while Lakewood is a mixed city. So you can’t compare their demographics at all.

  4. Lehalacha, I am curious what they say about Brooklyn the source of the Lakewood yungerleit. Is it going down since all the talent is going to Lakewood or is Brooklyn keeping enough at home.
Also isn’t BMG the largest yeshiva in the U.S.?

  5. deepthinker
I don’t think that is the reason. I think Lakewood has a very high rate of young couples moving there so there are many couple with one or two children or none at all while in Monro there are probably many families with children ages 5 to 4 to 24. But maybe I’m wrong.

  6. 9: what’s wrong with the freezer? Let the boys learn a bit. Shidduchim wrecks havoc on serious learning, boys are going out with no breathing time between girls.
AND, re the shidduch crisis: there are other yeshivos than Lakewood, aren’t there?

  7. LET THE ‘TIMES’ REPORT NEWS AND NOT MIX IN AND PUBLICIZE OUR CENSUS. ITS NONE OF ANYONES BUSINESS,TO KNOW HOW LARGE OUR FAMILIES ARE. THE LESS THEY KNOW THE BETTER IT IS.

  8. You cannot compare the communities of Kiryas Joel. Kiryas Joel is exlusively inhabited by Chassidic Jews. Lakewood has very significant non-Jewish poulation that will skew the median age upwards. If you were to only include the Orthodox Jewish population of Lakewood, the median age would certainly be close to the median age of Kiryas Joel.

  9. Here’s something to chew on. When Klal Yisroel was in mitzrayim our population went from about 70 men of all ages to over 600,000 between 20 and 60 or about 1.2 million. That means the population doubled 15 times (70 X 2 to the 15th = 1,146,880.00) or about once every 14 years( 210/15= 14) that would mean in mitzrayim we had an medium age of 14.

Note: For some reason the last generation in mitzrayim did not have much of an increase, as we can see from the later census at the end of the time in the midbar. This also does not take into account the medrash that 4/5 died during makas bichoyros

This is no way near scientific but it give you an idea of what an average age of 14 means to a community if it is maintained over an extended period of time.
