Senator Adams Hires Armed Bodyguards

sa.jpgBrooklyn, NY – Things are tough in the 20th Senate District.

State Sen. Eric Adams says parts of his Brooklyn district are so dangerous he needs an armed escort to accompany staffers to crime scenes and sites of community unrest.

The Democrat, a retired police captain himself, told The Post yesterday that he decided to hire a former cop as an aide after staffers complained of safety concerns during late-night visits with crime victims.

Adams recently advertised for a “deputy chief of staff” with a pistol permit, 15 years in law enforcement, one year in law school and “experience as a member of a political advance team.”

The three-term senator said the $75,000-a-year staffer would replace a current aide with similar qualifications.

“I have a diversified district,” Adams said. “One end is low- and moderate-income community housing, where staff goes to a lot of community meetings and some of those are in high-crime areas.”

“In some of the cases where my staff has been, they were scared,” Adams continued. “It’s mainly for my female staff.”

Adams, whose district includes parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Borough Park, Brownsville, Crown Heights, Flatbush and Windsor Terrace, saidhe considers it part of his job to provide liaisons between the community and police.

A critic of police misconduct, Adams co-founded the group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care while on the force.

He said his staff had a brush with danger just last summer while representing him at a “Stop the Violence” rally in the district during which a woman was shot.

Adams said having an aide with a police background on his staff has helped community relations.

He said he, too, occasionally carries a handgun in his district, but leaves it in a drawer while in Albany. He insisted he has no intention to use the staffer as a bodyguard.

“It’s not for me,” Adams said. “I’m my own bodyguard.”

  1. Hey Eric,
Be careful, the Mayor, “Lord Mike” will strip you and your aide of your guns!
In his mind only criminals can have guns – not Law abiding citizens!

  2. This bozo, and his elitism, is an obscenity: “I am entitled to carry a firearm, but not you serfs.” Pity the unarmed and helpless sheep of NYC. At least where I reside a law abiding citizen has the right to protect his life.

  3. My friend’s home alarm (linked to a central station) when off recently and it took the NYPD an hour and a half to respond to the call. Fortunately, it was a false alarm, but r”l had it not been, any criminal would have had plenty of time to do what ever he wanted! Commenter #2 in Arizona is correct! Not only can’t you count on the police to be there to protect you, but its extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get a handgun permit, and even items like mace or stun guns are illegal in NYC. Seems like the NY politicians want us to be helpless! NOTE!!!>> One thing you CAN do is get a rifle/shotgun permit! It does take a little time and a little effort but law abiding citizens CAN get them! This can give you the means to defend your family in case of a break-in or other security emergency. Just make sure that if you do get a rifle or shotgun you learn how to use it properly and safely and are EXTREMELY CAREFUL that kids can not, under any circumstances, get access to it!

  4. To #3,
Defense spray is legal in NY, provided you purchase it from a licensed gun dealer or licensed pharmacist. I’m almost sure this is true in the city also.

  5. To # 5 – I hope I am wrong and you are right, – but I’m 99% sure I am correct. Call an NYPD precinct and ask.
