82-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor To Testify Against Nazi Demjanjuk

dj2.jpgA German Jew who survived the Holocaust because his mother sent him to Britain is among those scheduled to testify at the war crimes trial of John Demjanjuk.

Kurt Gutmann, 82, has been called as a prosecution witness against Demjanjuk, who is accused of being an accomplice to the murder of 27,900 Polish Jews during World War II, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

Demjanjuk, 89, is being held in Munich while Germany prepares for what is set to be its last big public reckoning with Third Reich war crimes.

“As soon as I heard that Demjanjuk would be tried in Germany, I was determined to be a co-plaintiff,” Gutmann says. “I want to stay alive long enough to see John Demjanjuk get his just desserts.”

German authorities are in a rush to get the trial under way since the defendant and most of the witnesses are elderly and infirm.

The trial is likely to begin in mid-October, The Times says.

  1. I hope that every survivor who remembers the defendant will come and testify. Their stories MUST be told and taught so that this chapter in history NEVER BE FORGOTTEN! We must wipe out Amolaik, but we also must always remember what they did to our people, the Torah and Hashem. We remember even if we ourselves were not there, but we and our children must keep alive the memory of our Kedoshim and their evil oppressors, and realize that we,the Am Hashem have survived over 3500 years because Hashem’s people will NEVER cease to exist.

  2. Interesting. Over 10 years ago there was a much publicized and televized trial in which Demyanuk was tried and convicted. There were many live witnesses who were questioned at the time. Can someone explain to me why this most recent person willing to testify against will hold more water than the rest? Why the whole charade?
