Tombstone Collapses On Woman Davening In Queens Cemetery, Seriously Injuring Her

qbus.jpgQueens Hatzolah was on the scene of a serious call in a cemetery just off the Interboro (Jackie Robinson Parkway), with a patient who suffered a partial amputation of a leg.

Sources tell YWN that the middle aged woman was visiting the Union Field Cemetery, located at 82-11 Cypress Ave, to Daven at a Kever on Wednesday afternoon, when a tombstone suddenly collapsed on her – pinning her leg underneath R”L.

FDNY along with Queens Hatzolah members were expedited to the scene and proceeded to remove the tombstone which was lying on her leg.

Queens Hatzolah (Medic 008) along with numerous units treated the patient, and transported her to Jamaica Hospital in Queens.

  1. Monuments do not collapse. They are not buildings. They are most offen just 2 stones sitting on top of each other and their own weight keeps them in place. The lower base stone sits on a concrete foundation. This is common to millions of cemetery monuments throughout the world. Monuments can be toppled if rocked which is how vandalism occurs or if its foundation settles which can cause it to tilt. Tilting will alter the monument center of gravity to becomes too high and thereafter the top stone can topple if you lean against it. Therefore, who was with this unfortunate lady that may have unintentionally caused the accident? Otherwise, if she was alone, she, herself, could have caused the problem. The chance of an untouched monument that is not completely plumb and upright falling when a person just happens to be close is beyond remote. Will there be an investigation? I hope so. Regardless, we hope she will have a “refuah sh’laima”
