VIDEO: ZAKA Sings ‘Heveinu Shalom Aleichem’ With Haitian Quake Survivors

[VIDEO LINK BELOW] The following (unedited) text and video was sent to YWN by ZAKA (Taken on 1/16/10):

In a surreal moment captured on camera, tens of local Haitians expressed their gratitude to the ZAKA volunteers who have been working round the clock since their arrival in the disaster area last Friday – by singing Heveinu Shalom Aleichem in Hebrew.

ZAKA International Rescue Unit Head Mati Goldstein, Chief Operating Officer Dovie Maisel and volunteer Dano Monkotavitz taught the locals the tune and the words in Hebrew and together, they took time out from the grim reality around them to sing together.

  1. Several questions:

    1. Were there (hopefully not) any Yiden in Haiti that would necessitate ZAKA’s being there?

If yes, I rest my case.

If not, what are they doing there? Does any help ever come from Haiti during terrorist attacks r”l in E.Y.?

    2. Were any rabbonim consulted as to whether to send ZAKA down there? If yes, who are those rabbonim, and where is the letter confirming their support for this far-flung mission?

  2. Several questions:

    1) Why do you have to be so negative?
    2) Wasn’t ZAKA on their way home from Mexico anyhow?
    3) What has Haiti ever had that you could possibly expect them to give to anyone, never mind Yidden?
    4) Why do we need letters from rabbonim to allow ZAKA to perform this?

  3. If not, what are they doing there?

They were there to be mikayem a mitzvas asei. Which one? V’halachta b’drachav, mah hu rachum af atah tehei rachum… V’rachamav al kol ma’asuv.

  4. #1 , I have several questions for you.
If Israel R”L suffers a disaster on that magnitude, and a country moves forward and offers assistance, would you question it or would you be grateful to that country?
Israel B”H is a capable country and has the resources to protect its citizens and has the capabilty to deal with terrorist strikes on their own. This was not a terrorist attack. This was a huge kiddush hashem. Why do you need a daas torah letter for everything in life? Where is your daas torah approval for being on the internet ?
All you phony people should crawl back to the hole you originated from, because chances that you have done anything helpful to society is very slim. And I detect an element of hatred and jealousy at Zaka. They are mekadesh shem shamayim with their holy work. What have you done?

  5. #1 – You are reflective of all that is wrong with frum society today. If you had any daas torah at all, the question would not arise in the first place.

You are the perfect example of Frumkeit Gone Wrong.
I can’t believe this is even a question to you!

Firstly,This is a tragedy of epic proportions. The eyes of the world will be on who is there to help, and more importantly, who is not.

Secondly, what a fantastic opportunity for a kiddush Hashem!

Thirdly, why do you presume that Jews only help their own kind?? As a frum Jew (living in Lakewood), I am profoundly insulted by that implication.

I could keep on going, but somehow, I think it will all be lost on you.

  6. they set up a hospital in record breaking time, as well..what a kiddush hashem..

    no questions asked.
people are in trouble we help
    KOL HAKAVOD

  7. And, DaasTorahWtchdg (self-appointed, obviously), if just doing the right thing to help people in need (even if they’re not Jews) isn’t enough for you, how about the fact that Haiti is one of the very few nations on earth that took in Jews to save them from the Shoah. BTW, so did their neighbor, the Dominican Republic.
