NY School Bus Drivers OK Strike Threat

New York City – School bus drivers who transport city students voted Tuesday to authorize a strike.

Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 say talks with companies that provide bus transportation for the city have stalled over health care benefits.

Union leaders say the companies’ health insurance proposal would bankrupt the health insurance fund in three years, leaving members with no coverage.

The leaders say drivers will continue to safely transport school children until an agreement with employers cannot be reached.

  1. I hope this works out. I remember the school bus strike when I was in school (30 years ago). What a nightmare. I had to take 3 little kids from my neighborhood to school with me every morning on a 1.5 hour city bus ride.

  2. My father A”H was a strong member of the 1181 union & helped found it. In the 60’s he led a strike for a 5 cent increase & won! In 1980 the union went on strike for increases. They won but it broke the contract of the main school bus company – Varsity Transit – & that led to many other bus companies. Non of them were as strict about who they hired. Varsity used to do random drug & alcohol testing & never hired a convict. As my father coined the phrase: WE ARE CARRIED THE MOST PRECIOUS CARGO IN THE WORLD! These drivers deserve what they are asking for in return of their service to the school children of out school.
