UPDATE: IDF Soldier Shot Dead In Mistaken Fire Incident

[ORIGINAL UPDATES BELOW] 9:00PM IL: It is now cleared to release that an IDF soldier was killed by mistaken gunfire in the Kissufim area.

Golani Brigade forces operating in the Kissufim area were unaware that tank corps soldiers were operating in the area. The tank corps soldiers entered on foot in response to a report that three Gazans crossed the fence. They are not permitted to fire in that area for fear of striking civilians.

The infantry force responded in a jeep, detecting the movement of three tank corps soldiers, opening fire in the belief they were firing at terrorists. Tragically, one of the tank corps soldiers was killed.

The three Gazans were taken into custody and it was determined they are not terrorists, but crossed into Israel in the hope of securing work.

IDF Southern District Commander Major-General Yoav Gallant has ordered an investigation headed by a senior officer.

7:55PM IL: A number of hours ago soldiers were engaged in a heavy exchanges of gunfire in the Kissufim area, a location where sporadic gunfire has been taking place for much of the day.

Hamas sources report IDF soldiers are firing artillery shells and illumination flares in the Kissufim area.

7:06PM IL: At present, details of the event are not cleared by the military censor for publication, but a serious security incident has just occurred near Kissufim along the Gaza border.

YWN-Israel will provide additional details as soon as they may be released.

  1. If details of the event are not cleared by the military censor for publication, why is the telling that an event happened cleared for publication? Why don’t they just clear everything at the same time?

  2. Some general news items might be safe to tell (and even if they are not, it’s impossible to keep it from the public eye), but the details could take a week or weeks until it’s determined that no damage will occur as a result of publicizing them.

  3. Another Jewish death because of the government’s STUPID policies!
If these tank corp guys had gone in IN A TANK or other armored vehicle, the other Israeli soldiers that ended up firing on them WOULD HAVE KNOWN THEY WERE IDF!
Because they were worried about “civilian arabs” getting injured(and there are NO civilian arabs because they voted in the hamas government!) Jewish soldiers were sent in on foot, leading to the confusion and Jewish death!
    ANOTHER JEW IS DEAD!!!
ANOTHER JEWISH FAMILY IS DESTROYED FOREVER AS THEY BURY THEIR SON!!!
ANOTHER JEWISH FAMILY WILL SIT AT THE SEDER TABLE WITH AN EMPTY SEAT!!!
    HaSh-m yirachaym…

#5 – If this CH”V was your brother we were talking about, I doubt you would be “chilled out”. A jew is dead. That is a tragedy.

  5. #5 No, all AinOhdMilvado said needs to be repeated endlessly. Jewish lives are being risked and in this case, r”l, sacrificed, for the sake of not offending the arabs and their supporters.

  6. I agree with everything AinOhdMilvado said.

Also I wonder; American military aircraft have an Identify Friendly or Foe, device that they use to make sure they do not fire on other American aircraft.

Why can’t ground troops, have something similar?

Modern technology should make it easy, to make it small enough to easily carry as part of soldiers pack.
