PHOTOS: Hikind & Greenfield Urge Community To Complete Census

[PHOTO LINK BELOW] Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) and Councilman-elect David Greenfield were at the Boro Park Y urging the community to complete the 2010 census forms which were recently mailed to all residents. Hikind and Greenfield both filled out their forms to show how short and easy it is. The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years.

“Completing the census ensures that our community gets its fair share of $400 billion in federal funding for infrastructure and vital services,” said Assemblyman Hikind. “The data also helps determine the number of seats New York State has in the House of Representatives, which can also translate into more funding options.”

“Each person who sends back a census is responsible for bringing in approximately $3,000 in funds for New York City,” said Councilman-elect Greenfield. “It is vital for the future of the neighborhood, of Brooklyn, and of New York City as a whole, for every person to complete their census form.”

If a household does not mail back the questionnaire by the third week of April 2010, a Census Bureau enumerator will visit the household starting in May 2010. Enumerators will try up to six times to reach a household member, visiting residences on multiple days at different hours to collect the census data by interview.

Unlike previous census forms which asked invasive questions involving income and social security numbers, the Census 2010 questionnaire has been whittled down to a mere 10 questions. All personal data provided is protected under federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with anyone, including the IRS, FBI, CIA or any other government agency. All Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure, and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data.

Anyone with questions or concerns regarding Census 2010 is encouraged to contact the U.S. Census Bureau at 800-923-8282 or the Office of Assemblyman Hikind at 718-853-9616.

  1. All that is required under the constitution is to know how many people live in a place. That is why the first box has a frame around it. The rest of the information is purely voluntary. I voluntarily answered the other questions except name, phone number and address (which they already have).
