Owner Of Chimp Who Mauled Conn. Woman Dies

The owner of a chimpanzee who brutally mauled a Connecticut woman last year has died, an attorney confirmed Tuesday.

According to Robert Golger, his client Sandy Herold died Monday night after suffering a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Herold owned a 200-pound chimpanzee named Travis who lost control and attacked friend Charla Nash inside her home in February 2009. The animal ripped off Nash’s hands, nose, lips and eyes in the vicious attack.

Herold had asked Nash to come over her Stamford residence to help lure Travis back into the house.

The chimpanzee was later shot and killed outside the home by responding officers.

Nash recently underwent a preliminary evaluation to determine if she is a potential candidate for a face and hand transplant at a Harvard-affiliated hospital.

Nash’s family is currently suing Herold for $50 million and wants to sue the state for $150 million, saying state officials failed to prevent the attack.
