NYPD officials have beefed up security at their own headquarters after a thief nearly pulled off an audacious crime right under their noses.

Police say Jermaine Sweet, a 30-year-old ex-con, walked into an office on the 14th floor of One Police Plaza, the same floor where Commissioner Ray Kelly has his office.

He allegedly stole two laptops and a cell phone.

Sweet almost got away with it, but police caught him outside the building.
